The field of bovine surgery is crucial for the resolution of a large number of diseases which can’t be treated by conventional medicine and that affect the productive and reproductive performance of animals of high economic value. Nevertheless, because of the geographical features of our country and the large size of the livestock, it gets difficult to perform surgical procedures outside the owner’s properties, making the correct use of local and/or regional anesthesia like cornual nerve blocking, Peterson and epidurals imperative in common instances, such as dehorning, enucleation and caesarian section. The constant improving of anesthetic and surgical techniques makes the development of an actualized monography compiling the most used practices necessary. Making a bibliographic review not only constitutes a teaching material base, but it also supports the training of the future Specialists of Veterinary Medicine....

Euthanasia is a common procedure in the clinical practice of small animals, despite not being considered in most of the curricula of veterinary medicine students. For this reason, it can generate stress in the professionals who must carry it out, especially in newly qualified veterinarians; as well as generating experiences that are difficult to erase for pet guardians. This systematic review describes the medical and effective communication procedures recommended for the euthanasia of dogs and cats. Additionally, it considers the perceptions of owners and veterinary doctors, on certain procedures that would make this experience less traumatic for the pet, the family, and the medical team. In the light of this collected information, a protocol of good practices for the euthanasia of small animals is proposed....

Histopathology is the study that analyzes the morphological, and possibly molecular, alterations of affected tissues in individuals undergoing a disease process. The use of this complementary diagnostic method is quite widespread in veterinary medicine, especially in the fields of dermatology and oncology. The compilation of histopathological findings can be useful for small animals veterinarians, since it would allow them to have data that could guide the diagnoses of their patients, and thus, decide whether or not to send a sample to histopathology and/or to take other types of complementary examinations. In the present study, 2000 biopsy reports were evaluated, obtained from a veterinary pathology laboratory located in Santiago de Chile, of which 1783 were from dogs and 217 from cats. Patient data were obtained from the reports, as well as information on the main organs/tissues affected, and the most frequent pathologic categories and subcategories. Among the main findings, most of the reports came from spayed females, followed by unneutered males, neutered males and unneutered females, which is not consistent with similar investigations. Most of the samples were from animals older than one year, with the median age being 9 years in dogs and 8 years in cats. The most common breeds of dogs were mixed-breeds, poodles, German shepherds and boxers, while most of the cats were domestic short-haired and domestic long-haired cats. In the pathological findings was found a greater concordance with other histopathology studies, for example, in that the main organ sampled in both species is skin and subcutaneous, also the racial predisposition to mammary gland neoplasms in Poodle dogs, and mast cells tumors in Boxer dogs, as well as the presence of squamous cell carcinoma in cats....

Surgery is an essentially practical discipline requiring a successful integration of technical and nontechnical skills. A surgeon’s technical skill is deemed to be a function of his or her manual dexterity, and it is fundamental to the safe and effective delivery of surgical care. Therefore, it is important to evaluate it objectively and with valid and reliable methods. This title memory is focussed on the application of Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS), as a formal and validated evaluation method, in order to evaluate the acquisition of technical skill in simple suture of veterinary medicine students. This method based on performance and it consists in a checklist, a global rating scale and a padfail judgement. The application of the method was carried out as part of the internship activities during the last semester of the career, and consisted in evaluating the students before and after performing a theoretical suture class followed by training time. To do this, each student was recorded separately by making three simple stitches in a bank model, and the videos were analyzed. The results of the first evaluation indicated that 50% of the students did not have the expected skills, the main problems identified being the needle loading in the needle holder improperly, the non-eversion of the edges of the wound seeing the entrance and the exit of the needle, the position of the stitches with inadequate margins or asymmetrically, and inadequate handling of the dissecting forceps. On the other hand, the results of the second evaluation demonstrated the acquisition of skills, increasing the approval of the test to 90% and considerably reducing the problems identified. The main importance of the application of OSATS in this study was the objective assessment of the level of competence of the students, by means of the detailed knowledge of the components of the simple suture that they carried out adequately or inadequately. Its implementation as a formal evaluation instrument has represented a great contribution in the accreditation of technical competences in veterinary medicine students, and it is projected as a far-reaching method in the training of veterinary surgeons....
