The objective of this monograph was to update on the anatomy of the Vertebral Venous Plexus (VVP) of the dog and to describe the main anatomical aspects of clinical and surgical relevance of this network of venous blood vessels as well as to evaluate compliance with the current Nomina anatomica veterinaria (NAV) by the authors who refer to this structure. Electronic searches were carried out using 9 databases, where a total of 49 bibliographic sources were reviewed. Of these, 20 consisted of scientific articles. The exclusion criterion was publications older than 10 years, with the exception of veterinary anatomy reference books and publications that were not written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. In general, in the literature reviewed, there was consensus on what the components of the VVP are, along with a brief description of the VVP. The most widely described and largest component of the VVP is the Ventral Internal Vertebral Plexus (VIVP). The function of alternative venous blood return to the heart is the most frequently named. The absence of valves in the VIVP may be a promoting condition for tumor metastasis through the VVP. The abnormalities of the VVP detected by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), provide arguments in support of the diagnosis of Cervical Spondylomyelopathy (CSM), Hansen type 1 (HID type 1) and Hansen type 2 (HID type 2) Intervertebral Disc Herniation in the dog. The VVP hemorrhage that occurs in spinal surgeries represents a non-negligible danger to the patient's life. With respect to what was reviewed and discussed, it can be concluded that: (i) despite the scarce anatomical description of the VVP it was possible to understand how it is composed (ii) the level of evidence supporting the different functional capabilities of the VVP is low, however, the information on the presentation of VVP hemorrhage in different surgeries is higher (iii) contrary to the low knowledge of the different physiological aspects of the VVP and the clinical implication of it, it was possible to understand the different pathologies associated to this structure and (iv) the varied bibliographic references did not respect the current VAN to describe the VVP. The present literature review is the first attempt to provide a detailed description of the anatomy of the PVV and how it is involved in physiological mechanisms and pathologies associated to the nervous system. Previously Gómez and Freeman (2003) described the anatomy of this structure but did not delve into the pathologies associated with it nor into the physiopathological explanation of the functions attributed to it....
