Animal welfare has become a central theme to many research investigations; nevertheless, there are still species that have not been addressed in depth within these researches with productive species. This is the case of race horses, which enjoy better conditions compared to work horses, but not because their welfare is assured. The present work devotes itself to equestrian jumping horses; for which a pattern of evaluation of its animal welfare encompasses direct observations to the animal and indirect to their environment, with the help of a bibliographic review and support of those in contact most often with jumping horses. After development the pattern was tested in five equestrian centers between Santiago and Valparaiso. The pattern was applicable in the field and the results of equine welfare in general delivered a good evaluation, although it is recommended to further develop the elaborate pattern and add research about equine sport in Chile....

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging and zoonotic disease disseminated worldwide. It has not been studied in detail in equines, species that generally presents the subclinical form of the disease. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira spp. in a population of horses from a military equestrian center of Valparaíso region. A population of 259 individuals was assessed, consisting of males and females of various ages and functions. The serum samples were subjected to microscopic agglutination test (micro-MAT) towards to six serovars of Leptospira spp. The frequency of positive serums to one or more serovars of Leptospira spp., with titles egual or over 1: 100 was a 23.55%. The most frequent serovares present were Autumnalis (45.9%), Ballum (39.34%) and Canicola (14.75%). Serums did not react to Hardjo, Pomona and Icterohaemorrhagiae. Titers obtained varied from 1: 100 to 1: 1600. These results confirm that the military equestrian center horses are exposed to leptospirosis. Sex and age of the specimens did not have a significant relationship with seropositivity to Leptospira spp. The training function (protocole mounted ceremony horses) resulted as a protection factor, being 2.94 times less likely to contract the infection. Competitive events outside the equestrian center, a high rate of annual replacement and periodic redistribution of stables, could be related with the higher risk of sport horses for contracting leptospirosis....
