In recent years, the demand for minimally processed fresh products has increased and there is a real need to find preservation alternatives that avoid the use of synthetic antimicrobials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of active packaging with different concentrations of natural antimicrobials (citral and carvacrol) and then to combine the UV-C light (10 kJ m-2) used as pre-treatment, with the selected active packages on baby arugula (Eruca sativa). The atmospheric concentration inside the bags (CO2 and O2) was not affected by the evaluated doses of citral (Ci: 100, 150 and 350 μL) or carvacrol (Ca: 75, 100 and 150 μL). The antimicrobial effect of citral was positive only in the first 3 days of storage, while most microbiological inhibition was achieved with 75 Ca treatment. The color of arugula in active packaging showed no variation between treatments over time, but the control (BP) tended to show clear leaves. The phenolic content and antioxidant activity were not affected by citral, while the 75 and 100 Ca treatments had a higher phenolic content and antioxidant capacity compared to the control. The last test combined UV-C with active packaging with selected antimicrobial doses (150 Ci; 75 Ca; mix 75 150 Ci + Ca). The O2 concentration decreased rapidly and visually the leaves were not affected. The application of UV-C with the mixture of antimicrobials was more effective in reducing aerobic mesophilic and psychrotrophic microorganisms and enterobacteria. The content of phenols and vitamin C were not affected by the treatments, unlike antioxidant activity which decreased. Active packaging with natural antimicrobials and UV-C could contribute as an innovative technique of combined methods to retard microbial growth, maintaining the green color of baby arugula salads....

INTRODUCTION: In Chile, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbility and mortality. Among the drugs used for their treatment are Vitamin K antagonists (VKA), which have a narrow therapeutic margin associated with high individual variability in their response. Pharmacogenetic studies carried out to date indicate that the CYP2C9*2, CYP2C9*3 and VKORC1-1639G>A polymorphisms in Caucasian populations explain the variability of this response 60%. Therefore, in this thesis the influence of other genetic variants is evaluated to improve the clinical dosage. Among these are coagulation factor VII, CYP4F2 and γ-glutamyl carboxylase (GGCx), participants in the vitamin K cycle. HYPHOTHESIS: Genetic variations in the loci of the GGCx, VKORC1, CYP2C9, FVII and CYP4F2 genes, contribute to the variability of the weekly dose required in patients undergoing treatment with VKA. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between genetic polymorphisms in the loci of the FVII, CYP4F2, GGCx, VKORC1 and CYP2C9 genes with the variability in the weekly dose required by patients under treatment with VKA. METHODOLOGY: 304 Patients were recruited from the Oral Anticoagulant Treatment Polyclinics (TACO) of the Metropolitan Health Service West, with a therapeutic range of INR value between 2.0-3.0, with three consecutive controls within the range between January 2010 to December 2017. Genotype - phenotype association analyzes were performed comparing dose means between genotypes. The real-time PCR technique was used by TaqMan® probes. Associations were estimated with multivariate analysis and odds ratios (95% confidence level). RESULTS: Associations were obtained of weekly therapeutic dose averages (WTD) with individual genotypes and genotypes combined between different genes. The genetic variants of CYP2C9 * 3 and VKORC1 (rs9923231) are related to low doses of Acenocoumarol, while the genetic variants of CYP4F2 and VKORC1 (rs7294) related to high doses of Acenocoumarol. When grouping the non-genetic variants (sex/age) with the genetic variants for low doses of acenocoumarol explains the variability in 22,8%, on the other hand, the grouping of the non-genetic variants (sex/age) with the genetic variants for High dose of acenocoumarol explains the variability by 7,94%. Finally, the grouping of all the variables studied explains the variability in the dose requirement of acenocoumarol in 23,79%. CONCLUSION: The SNP VKORC1 (rs9923231) and CYP2C9*3 (rs1057910) explain the requeriment for a lower weekly therapeutic dose of acenocoumarol. While the SNP VKORC1 (rs7294) and CYP4F2 (rs2108622) explain the requeriment of a higher weekly therapeutic dose of acenocoumarol....

"Cómo traer un pedacito de Inglaterra": a descriptive analysis of social representations of English as a foreign language in private language teaching schools in Santiago de Chile
In the last decades, many private language teaching schools (PLTS) have established themselves as a prominent medium for learning English in Chile. Nevertheless, scarce attention has been paid to issues regarding the language ideologies and the social representations behind these institutions. Consequently, the aim of this study is to characterize them concerning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and its social, political, and pedagogical implications in the process of teaching and learning in two PLTS from Santiago de Chile, Instituto Chileno-Británico de Cultura and Talk Chile. To accomplish this, 17 participants were selected among the three main social actors. Semi-structured interviews were carried out in the case of teachers and academic coordinators, while two focus groups were conducted in the case of the students. Results depict that the main categories, such as romantic and instrumental linguistic ideologies, pedagogical issues and social representations in advertising have an incidence in people’s beliefs when considering English as elemental, global and essential in their professional and daily life....
