The transformations experienced by the society have strongly impacted the role of the medical profession in the world. Various factors such as technological progress and knowledge, globalization, massive access to information, market, policy and health systems determine a new and changing scenario for the practice of medicine. For several decades, there has been a growing concern from various medical schools worldwide to strengthen the teaching of medical students on contents related to professionalism, in order to prepare more efficiently future doctors. Since these students are supposed to successfully face the challenge to develop in this new context without abandoning the principles of hippocratic medicine, which for centuries have guided the exercise of the profession in the West. Although there are different interpretations and definitions for medical professionalism, there is consensus that involves humanitarian attitudes and behaviors that complement scientific and technical formation of excellence, which is framed in ethics and privilege above all the patients’ welfare. The present thesis reviewed literature makes reference to various proposals to approach teaching and curricular introduction of medical professionalism. Most researchers raise the need to incorporate medical professionalism transversely in the curriculum using a variety of methodologies at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Besides the teaching of medical professionalism, the institutional commitment is also a relevant element. Such commitment must involve all the actors in the process of formation; because isolated initiatives without the commitment will not reach meaningful outcomes. This educational research aims to help improve professionalism in teaching undergraduates at the Medical School of the Catholic University of Maule. The study focuses on describing the coherence between the vision of professionalism that emerges from the formation project of the career and the students and teachers’ perception upon it. The research methodology corresponds to a descriptive, qualitative model, and the data collection was developed through in-depth interviews and focus group with a selected group of students and teachers. The main topics which are considered are: the concept of medical professionalism; methodologies and learning contexts in relation to the declared formative project, and its implementation and development throughout the formation process. From the study, it is expected to obtain relevant information to design and develop new strategies for teaching medical professionalism that complements the current curriculum....
