The use of veterinary drugs and pesticides may lead to the presence of residues in food products. However, presence of residues in products from small farmers has been poorly documented in our country. Legislation regulates their use and establishes maximum residual limits (MRLs) for chemical substances, in accordance with Codex Alimentarius. Nevertheless, current surveillance programs leave aside foods from small farmers, mostly traded in local markets. The aim of the present study was to assess the presence of veterinary drugs and pesticides residues in products of animal origin (lamb meat, milk and honey), from small family farmers of six regions of Chile. Antimicrobial screening method (four-plate test), liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) were used for the detection and quantification of chemical residues of veterinary drugs (antimicrobials and antiparasitics). On the other hand, gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS) was used for the analysis of pesticides. A total of 122 samples were taken to perform the laboratory analysis: honey (29 samples from Bio-Bio and Valparaíso regions), lamb meat (14 samples from O'Higgins region), and milk (79 samples from Bio-Bio, Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions). For pesticides, 2 of 15 (13.3%) milk samples contained Permethrin residues, although detected concentrations were under MRL established in Chile. Meanwhile in honey samples, none pesticides residues were detected. In the case of veterinary drugs, 4 of 14 (28.6%) lamb meat samples and 11 of 79 (13.9%) milk samples showed evidence of antimicrobial residues, corresponding to tetracyclines, macrolides, aminoglycosides and beta-lactams families. From these samples, 1 lamb meat sample (7.1%) and 2 milk samples (2.5%) where non-compliant exceeding the established MRLs for these matrices. For honey, in 7 of the 29 samples (24.1%) traces of tetracyclines and sulfonamides were detected. Additionally, amitraz was analyzed in honey samples; however, no residues of this substance were detected in this matrix. These findings show that there is presence of chemical contaminants in some food products from small family farmers. However, most of them were compliant, as concentrations found did not surpass established MRL. This study provides a baseline to reconsider the transfer, adoption and awareness of good management practices (GMP) in small family farming in Chile. Collected data will allow improving production conditions, contributing to the development surveillance programs focused in primary products from peasant family farmers....

Una clase de Etica Médica del presidente Allende

Rol de los sistemas productivos de traspatios en la economía del hogar, seguridad alimentaria e igualdad de género de diferentes zonas de Chile
(Universidad de Chile, 2016)

Food safety is the condition where all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences to lead an active and healthy life. Four dimensions are available for evaluating it: Food availability, food access, utilization and stability at its source; which can be evaluated and intervened. When food security is compromised, breeding in family production units, both birds and pigs has been described as advantageous, mainly because both are species that do not generate high costs, require little space and technology. Also, these are productive systems where a greater contribution of women is described in its operation, which is associated with lower-income households. Accordingly, and due to the lack of national data, this study determined the contribution of poultry and/or pigs kept in backyard production systems to the household economy, food security and gender equality in different areas of Chile, as well as evaluate local conditions that determine the different contributions. The work was carried out with 58 families in the communes of Catemu and Rinconada de los Andes, in the Valparaiso region, Pirque and San José de Maipo in the Metropolitana region, and finally, Queilén and Galvarino of the Los Lagos and La Araucanía regions ,respectively. Monthly monitoring to families was conducted for a period of eight months, where information was collected on the activities of production and gender role in maintaining poultry and pigs. Also, information on costs and revenues associated with the production of these species was collected, along with the family expenses on food makes avian and swine origin. With information obtained, two indicators associated with vulnerability of these productive units against Food Insecurity one and another associated with contribution of poultry and pigs access food were built. The indicators results suggest differences between areas in the dimensions of biological availability and utilization of food, however, found no differences in access to these. Also, differences were found in providing and contribution of the productive system at home, related to family surpluses, the use of these in the purchase of external food and stability of production....
