Introduction: Approximately, 30% of worldwide cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appear before the age of 20, mostly in the adolescence. Children and adolescents with chronic diseases show an adherence to treatment (AT) between 43% and 100%, with an average of 58% in developed countries. Objective: To assess the effect in adherence to treatment of health education activities in pediatric patients with IBD. Method: A database with the information from clinical records was created to recruit 20 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn´s disease (CD) during a six months period. Sociodemographic and morbid data were obtained. The development of educational material was reviewed by the medical team of the service and applied in two interventions with periodicity greater than or equal to 1 month also indirect methods were used to measure adherence: Haynes Sackett (HS), Morisky Green (MG) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaires. At the end of the study, a pharmacist service assessment survey was applied to know the participant’s perception about the interventions and the obtained results. Results: Of a total of twenty patients, 7 declined to participate in the study, while 13 patients were recruited. The total of the study group had a diagnosis of UC, with a higher proportion of males (9/13) and mostly adolescents (12/13). In addition, two patients had ASJ comorbidity. According the HS evaluation, patient’s perception of their difficulty to follow the drug treatment improves in 4 of 5 patients with problems at the beginning of the investigation. The MG questionnaire shows adherence improvement in 3 of 4 patients which refers being non-compliant with mesalazine at the beginning of the study. In addition, a patient with biological therapy and oral methotrexate improves his compliance at the end of the study. According to VAS, patients were "adherents" at the beginning and at the end of the study. The difficulties to follow the treatment referred by the participants were omission, multiple schedules of administration, polypharmacy and discomfort to continue treatment in front of their peers. On the other hand, 13 participants said they were satisfied with the interventions received and recognized the importance of taking their medication. Conclusion: After the education, four participants improved the therapeutic adherence to their main treatment. Although the intervention could be a contributory factor in the improvement of therapeutic compliance, it could not be concluded that this increase was due to health education...

The West Antarctic Peninsula has been described as one of the
