More than four decades after the beginning of lithium exploitation in the Salar de Atacama, it has caused profound environmental impacts on its ecosystems and a strong socio territorial impact on the Atacameño indigenous communities that have inhabited it for more than 10,000 years. This documents an (un)sustainable result of that extractivist activity. Although lithium production is associated with a cleaner planetary energy matrix, linked to the generation of batteries for the electric vehicles of the "green economies" of the future, there is a strong contradiction between these discourses and the technology used for its extraction, which uses evaporation pools of brine from the core of the salt flat that consume enormous amounts of water in one of the driest geographical areas of the planet. This has caused the progressive drying of water bodies, such as lagoons, meadows and wetlands that have been the basis of subsistence of the Likan-Antai culture (thanks to transhumance strategies between the different ecological levels that make up their hábitat), as well as a strong impact on the basin water balance. This has created an environmental sacrifice zone in the salt flat, under whose conditions the indigenous communities have been forced to participate in economic and political negotiations with the mining companies, which have accentuated their dependence and provoked their territorial and cultural disarticulation, particularly with respect to the hydro social territory in terms of disputes over water between their respective and antagonistic territorial conceptions. This research seeks to understand the socio-territorial relations between community, mining companies and state actors generated around the lithium industry and its impact on the Atacameño indigenous communities and to understand the way in which the meanings about the value of territory are being re-constructed and re-negotiated. On the other hand, we seek to contrast these divergent rationalities of territorial valuation with the conceptions of sustainability and sustainable socio-territorial development that they promote, in order to contribute to the understanding of the socio-territorial (in)sustainable outcome associated with lithium mining in this geographic space. How to establish a shared definition of sustainable socio-territorial development, so that these territories, instead of being areas of environmental sacrifice become zones of shared benefit?...
