Animal welfare has become a central theme to many research investigations; nevertheless, there are still species that have not been addressed in depth within these researches with productive species. This is the case of race horses, which enjoy better conditions compared to work horses, but not because their welfare is assured. The present work devotes itself to equestrian jumping horses; for which a pattern of evaluation of its animal welfare encompasses direct observations to the animal and indirect to their environment, with the help of a bibliographic review and support of those in contact most often with jumping horses. After development the pattern was tested in five equestrian centers between Santiago and Valparaiso. The pattern was applicable in the field and the results of equine welfare in general delivered a good evaluation, although it is recommended to further develop the elaborate pattern and add research about equine sport in Chile....

The animal welfare comprises three aspects: the emotional state of the animal, the biological response and the expression of behavior: These are observable in each one of them when facing the conditions of their environment, e.g. the facilities, the personal management or the weather. This issue has acquired great importance, specially in the systems of livestock exploitation, since it covers many principles that have to do with the ethical responsibility to ensure the safety of species, increase productivity and economic benefits. In Chile, a large part of the productive systems of cattle are based in extensive grazed. While there are some indicators of animal welfare inherent in the sector, most are concentrated in intensive production systems. This work is a qualitative research and was based on the proposal of indicators that could measure the animal welfare conditions in extensive cattle ranching systems in Chile. The purpose was to find indicators that could replace those proposed in the Welfare Quality® protocol that failed when they were applied for the first time in this same type of productive system. The indicators were: absence of prolonged thirst, absence of prolonged hunger, comfort of rest and thermal comfort. The literature, both national and international, academic studies and consultation of experts, among others, was reviewed, obtaining 10 indicators that could evaluate these criteria. The indicators were tested and 9 of these were found to be applicable under certain conditions. However, it was concluded that these indicators, by themselves, do not bring about a substantive improvement of the existing protocol, because it is still necessary to consider variables that were not herein considered. There are many gaps that need to be filled to put together a Welfare Quality protocol for extensive cattle production systems...

There is a wide variety of tagging devices used in fish in marine environments for individual identification and data collection related to the movement and behavior of individuals. To ensure the survival and maintenance of the animal welfare status of tagged fish, special emphasis should be placed on tagging methodologies and procedures from an individual health point of view. This study offers an overview of the main tagging devices used, compiles key characteristics of the used of tags in studies published in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and proposes a tagging protocol with an acoustic transmitter and t-bar tag for individuals of jerguilla species (Aplodactylus punctatus). Four hundred and ninety-five different tagging procedures contained in 271 articles were analyzed, in which predominated the use of traditional external tags such as t-bar and dart tag (33.7%), acoustic transmitter tag (32.7%) and the visible elastomer implant tag (12%). It was evidenced that 22% of the tagging procedures used more than one tag per individual and furthermore, only 24% of the procedures used some type of pharmacological support (anesthesia or antibiotic). Individuals of the family Carcharhinidae (15%), Serranidae (12%) and Lutjanidae (6%) were predominantly tagged, with a regional concentration in the North America continent (60%) and in environments on the continental shelf (72%), mainly for data collection about the movement and behavior of the species. Only 18% of the revised tagging procedures were carried out in laboratory conditions and it was evidenced that a considerable group of studies (40%) were carried out in marine protected areas under some figure of protection or management. A protocol for tagging rockfish is also proposed, to a common reef fish such morwong or jerguilla (Aplodactylus punctatus) with acoustic transmitter and t-bar tag as multiple tagging procedures. Therefore in the final chapter of this study the handling practices, sterile technique, anesthetic technique, tagging procedure and supervision guidelines are included to ensure animal welfare related to movement and animal dispersal studies...
