Local species richness is determinated by immigration and extintion processes. The relative importance of both processes can be evaluated by the relationship between regional and local richness. This relation assumes that an increment of regional richness is positively correlated with immigration to local sites, therefore, this analysis allow to compare resultant local richness of different immigration. In this thesis I evaluated the importance of regional richness and immigration rates on the structuration of local species richness of woody plant in the mediterranean zone of Chile. Furthermore, I evaluated the assumption of the positive correlation between immigration and regional richness. Regions corresponded to different vegetational formations of mediterranean zone of Chile. Local richness was evaluated as number of species in plots of 100 m2. Immigration was evaluated by a index that relation the new species (in seeds) observed per each plot during six months, with the number of species available for immigrate. Also, 1 correlated climatic variables with local and regional richness per formation. A significative linear and positive relation was observed between regional richness and immigration, thus corroborating the basic assumptions of this analysis. Also, a significative linear positive relation was observed between regional and local richness. In conclusion, there is an important effect of regional richness and immigration on local richness. There was not significative relation between c1imatic variables and local or regional richness. Considering the environmental homogeneity inside formations, these results suggest that local assemblages of woody plant species are insaturated. Finally, the significative relationship between regional and local richness indicate that the geographic variation of local richness is controled by regional richness and therefore by biogeographic and evolutionary processes determining of regional richness....

This study examines the effects of migration on the Chilean labor market through a general equilibrium model with search and matching frictions using a random search approach, which allows for a better approximation to long-term equilibria. The study explores the effects of migration on labor variables such as unemployment and wages, as well as evaluates its effects on consumer welfare. The model differs from existing literature by including a gender approach and evaluating the long-term impacts of migration in an emerging economy such as Chile. The study found that the arrival of low-skilled migrants increased wages and decreased the unemployment rate of low-skilled native workers, improving their welfare. However, women experienced a lower increase in their welfare due to the asymmetric arrival of men and women in the migration flow. On the other hand, highskilled native workers suffered the consequences of the arrival of a higher proportion of highly skilled migrants, generating competition, unemployment, and lower wages. In aggregate terms, migration had a positive effect on the population, but the native population as a whole experienced a decrease in their welfare due to the loss of welfare of high-skilled workers....
