Histopathology is the study that analyzes the morphological, and possibly molecular, alterations of affected tissues in individuals undergoing a disease process. The use of this complementary diagnostic method is quite widespread in veterinary medicine, especially in the fields of dermatology and oncology. The compilation of histopathological findings can be useful for small animals veterinarians, since it would allow them to have data that could guide the diagnoses of their patients, and thus, decide whether or not to send a sample to histopathology and/or to take other types of complementary examinations. In the present study, 2000 biopsy reports were evaluated, obtained from a veterinary pathology laboratory located in Santiago de Chile, of which 1783 were from dogs and 217 from cats. Patient data were obtained from the reports, as well as information on the main organs/tissues affected, and the most frequent pathologic categories and subcategories. Among the main findings, most of the reports came from spayed females, followed by unneutered males, neutered males and unneutered females, which is not consistent with similar investigations. Most of the samples were from animals older than one year, with the median age being 9 years in dogs and 8 years in cats. The most common breeds of dogs were mixed-breeds, poodles, German shepherds and boxers, while most of the cats were domestic short-haired and domestic long-haired cats. In the pathological findings was found a greater concordance with other histopathology studies, for example, in that the main organ sampled in both species is skin and subcutaneous, also the racial predisposition to mammary gland neoplasms in Poodle dogs, and mast cells tumors in Boxer dogs, as well as the presence of squamous cell carcinoma in cats....
