Introduction: In the last 20 years, the survival of preterm infants and extremely preterm infants has increased significantly, so it is essential to increase the knowledge about characteristics of this particular group. Prematurity is associated with various conditions that can cause alterations in the development of orofacial functions. These changes directly affect the orofacial reflexes, nutritive sucking and non-nutritive sucking, which will affect the proper acquisition of feeding patterns, interfering with optimal nutrition and feeding of the child. Objectives: Characterize orofacial reflexes, non-nutritive and nutritive sucking in extremely preterm infants at 3 and 6 months of corrected age. Material and Methods: Descriptive study in which 25 extremely preterm infants at 3 and 6 months of corrected age were evaluated, from the Polyclinic tracking of premature of Roberto del Río’s Hospital. Parents were informed and asked for their authorisation by an informed consent and an anamnestic interview was applied. The evaluation of the infants was made through the application of the Orofacial Functions Evaluation Protocol, which implies the observation of the orofacial functions, non-nutritive and nutritive sucking. Results: The orofacial reflexes were found adequate in most children of the study. From all the reflexes evaluated, at 3 months corrected age the 16,6% was found altered and at 6 months corrected age only 1,5%, this means an improvement at 6 months in relation to the group of 3 months. Non-nutritive sucking in the 3 months corrected age group was inefficient in 92.9% and the most altered parameter was the rhythm, while in the group of 6 months corrected age, 54.5% had a inefficient non-nutritive sucking and the other 45.5% absent, being the jaw movement the most altered parameter. Nutritive sucking in the group of 3 months was ineffective in 83.3%, while in the group of 6 months was 90.9% inefficient, the most altered parameter in both groups was the rhythm. Conclusions: The orofacial reflexes were mostly adequate. Non-nutritive sucking pattern was inefficient in most of the sample, and the rythm was the most altered parameter at 3 months corrected age, while at 6 months corrected age was the jaw movement. Finally, the nutritive sucking pattern was inefficient in most of the sample, and the most altered parameter was the rhythm in both groups....

Research dealing with social, human and behavioral sciences should have a special regulation and a clear normativity when it interrelates with research done in the health sciences and professions. Situational aspects that make it evident how risks to an individual’s dignity, image, reputation, credibility or innocence are shown, a proposal is given to the people that formulate public policy for this specific sector, orienting them to consider a more consensus approach to the members of ethics committees, researchers and those who finance projects that might infringe the rights of the participants in the research projects, being these individuals or communities....

Medical advances in recent years have allowed the survival of children born before 32 weeks gestation increases. That is why the population of extremely premature infants has been on a steady rise, it becomes necessary to focus future research on them in order to deepen in their potential linguistic difficulties. This research aims to describe the linguistic performance of Chilean children at 1st grade of primary school with history of extreme prematurity, followed in the monitoring program premature CRS Cordillera, comparing their performance against children without prematurity history. For this purpose, the phonological, morphosyntactic, pragmatic and narrative speaking levels have been measured. The results obtained suggest that the development of children with history of extreme prematurity did not differ significantly from those without history of prematurity, and even perform better in the area of morphosyntax. These results may have been influenced by uncontrolled variables at the time of investigation. Variables like the type of educational institution where children attend, the opportunity of early speech therapy care of extremely premature children under the monitoring program, and the size of the sample. Therefore, it is suggested doing further research oriented on describing the linguistic performance of this population, controlling for these variables, in order to obtain robust results which allows to guide efficiently the assessment, intervention and prognosis of these children....
