The atmosphere is essential for life and human survival. However, the atmospheric pollution that affects the majority of cities of the world is related to several diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, loss of lung function and even death. The atmospheric pollution is defined as the alteration of the natural composition of the atmosphere, related to particulate material arisen from anthropogenic and natural sources. These particles can be classified according to their size in: particles with diameter less than 2.5 μm, symbolized as PM2.5, and particles with diameter less than 10 μm, symbolized as PM10. Local studies have indicated that PM10 concentration could be influenced by climatic variables (such as average annual temperature, average maximum wind speed, mean annual average), geographical (number of inhabitants) and vegetational (NDVI). To date, there are not studies that assess the aforementioned relationships at a global scale. In this context, this project seeks to identify the relationship between climatic, geographical and vegetational variables with the PM10 concentration in thousands of cities located in different climatic zones of the world. The results indicate that the variables that better explain the amount of particulate material in the analyzed cities are: Population (p value <0.001 and ρ = 0.4), Mean annual precipitation (p value <0.001 and ρ = -0.3), Latitude (p value <0.001 and ρ = -0.5), NDVI (p value <0.001 and ρ = -0.3). In conclusion, the variables that better explain the PM10 concentration in each city highly depend on the geographical location of the city, and as a consequence on its climate and vegetational characteristics. Finally, it is important to note that considering the important relationship between the NDVI and PM10 concentration, future management plans to reduce atmospheric pollution should take into account elements such as reforestation and improving urban green spaces....
