Children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) are considered to be at risk for difficulties in learning to read during the school years. Deficits in linguistic and metalinguistic aspects, considered predictors of reading, underlie these difficulties. However, other skills relevant for adequate reading performance such as visual perception and eye movements have been less studied in this population. Shared book reading, especially the process of attention to pictures and/or text may reflect the developmental level of print awareness, an emergent literacy skill that predicts success in learning to read. Using the technique of eye tracking, visual perception and the pattern of eye movements during this activity can be accounted for. The present study compared the eye movements and visual perception of subjects with SLI and those with Typical Language Development (TLD) using Eye Tracking during shared book reading. The amount of attention to the text was measured and eye movements were recorded in a sample of 15 children with SLI and 14 children with TLD in order to reflect the development of print awareness and to analyse the eye movements of children with SLI during this activity to determine whether the pattern of visual scanning is different. The results suggest that both groups pay more attention to the images than to the text, although children with TLD look at the text slightly earlier. It is concluded that children's interest in pictures does not decrease with the presence of language difficulties, and that pictures still represent the main content in a shared book reading. In summary, children with SLI in terms of their eye movements and in terms of the development of print awareness behave similarly to their peers with TLD....
