Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen, which can cause severe diseases in humans, such as hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Infections have been reported in people as a result of direct contact with companion animals, and from these STEC strains with virulotype associated with severe disease have been isolated. However, to date in Chile there is no information available about it. For this reason, this project seeks to provide information on the characterization of circulating STEC strains in part of the national dog and cat population. In order to comply with the above, rectal swabs from 300 dogs and 300 pet cats were collected between October and December of 2018. Two rounds of culture were carried out in tripticase soy broth and on MacConkey agar; and by means of PCR, the presence of the stx1 and stx2 genes was attempted in order to identify STEC strains in the samples obtained. In addition, the detection of eae, lpf, saa and hlyA genes in the isolated STEC strains was contemplated. However, with this methodology it was not possible to isolate STEC strains in the processed samples. In view of the results obtained, we can conclude that household dogs and cats in some communes of the Metropolitan Region would represent a low risk in the transmission of STEC strains with virulence determinants associated with HC and HUS in people. However, it is necessary to carry out further studies, with a larger sample size and that address the different variables that may affect the colonization of STEC in these animals....

Obesity in dogs is defined as a condition of positive energy balance with excessive formation of adipose tissue that generates adverse effects on the morbidity and mortality of the canine. The prevalence of obesity in dogs has been increasing, in previous studies it is estimated that they vary between 18% and 44% worldwide. Currently in Chile, there are no official studies of prevalence of overweight/obesity in pets. The objective of this Title Report was to characterize the state of overweight/obesity and risk factors of the canines that attend a Veterinary Medical consultation in FAVET clinical care centers. In both clinical care centers, and according to the specific sample size (386 individuals), a previously validated survey was applied to the owners of the canines. This survey measured a total of 60 variables and sought to relate factors associated with the animal and the owner with the presentation of canine obesity. For the characterization of overweight/obesity the body condition is evaluated using a 5-point scale, and for the analysis of the data a logistic regression model is used, in which the use of a liberal value criterion was proposed, conserving for the multivariable analysis to all those factors that to the univariate analysis consider a value of p < 0.25. Then, a gradual phase-out procedure was considered, where they had variables with non-significant regression coefficients (p > 0.05) were removed from the model. The survey results showed a 37.8% prevalence of overweight/obesity at the El Roble Veterinary Health Center, and 48.7% of overweight/obesity at the Bilbao Veterinary Clinical Hospital. The total prevalence in this study was 43.3% overweight/obesity. Regarding the risk factors, five are identified: (1) the importance that the owners have in the opinion of a friend / relative when buying food from their pets (OR = 84, p < 0.001), (2 ) visit the veterinarian scheduled or followed (OR = 7, p < 0.006), (3) that the pet did not have a disease (OR = 3, p < 0.04), (4) that the owner was normal weight (OR = 3, p < 0.012), and (5) the amount of daily food that will be provided to your pets (OR = 1, p < 0.028). This study constitutes the first official report of prevalence of overweight/obesity in canines of the Metropolitan Region....

The domestication of dogs is a long-standing process integrating itself as a fundamental part of families and society. However, this process has not been considered responsibly by human beings, evidenced by the rise in abandoned and free-living dogs in recent years. Considering this, a training process for people that are planning on obtaining a pet becomes a high priority; so they can know their responsabilities, along with identifying the needs and cares that dogs require to mantain a good quality of life. In order to develop this training process, Veterinarians are a centerpiece, since there is a sense of responsability towards the community, involving Responsible Dog Ownership. Young children are more receptive to new knowledge and assimilate it more naturally compared to adults. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate 5th grade students beign taught an educational unit on responsible dog ownership. The investigation started with a diagnosis meant to idenfify the students' prior knowledge about Responsible Dog Ownership and their basic cares. With this as a foundation, an education unit was designed using active-participatory methodologies on Responsible Dog Ownership. It was applied to 20 fifth grade students from the Escuela Básica Marta Brunet school, whose ages vary between 10 and 13 years old. Quantitative and qualitative instruments where applied for the evaluation. Results showed an increase of the total scores upon completion of the educational unit. The active-participatory methodologies allowed students to be part of their own educational process, reinforcing their prior knowledge while also creating new insights. The debate spaces also allowed consideration about the care practices of the students towards their dogs, achieving significant learning...
