In different continents, different forms of ecological knowledge and practices have evolved, which have generated different worldviews that carry a plurality of values about nature. However, after the “great acceleration” triggered at the end of World War II, global society has been governed by an economic and governance system that has triggered processes of biocultural homogenization at multiple scales. This homogenization has generated, and has been reinforced by, "physical barriers" and cognitive "barriers" that hinder the connection between global society and nature. Even so, glocalization offers alternatives to overcome these barriers and would allow to complementarily use global and local tools to reinventing the democratization of subjectivities and singularities of biocultural elements. This socio-ecological research case study carried out in Puerto Williams, Cabo de Hornos (Chile) aimed to recognize the different relationships and the physical and / or cognitive barriers present between the studied society and nature. As a way to overcome these barriers, the use of “biocultural catalysts” was suggested to promote conceptualizations and evaluations that would guide people to take an interest in re-knowing and re-evaluating the places or habitats where they live. These "biocultural catalysts" contribute to understanding life habits and the consequences they have for the co-inhabiting communities, and consequently to function as means that allow overcoming the barriers that homogenize the bioculture. The methodology of this study included a content analysis in interviews with people from different sociocultural groups. The analysis showed that the people interviewed present different forms of inhabiting in the community, global, local, glocal and individual. The types of habitability were related to the types of relationships described by Uta Berghöfer and collaborators (2008) and to the types of barriers between society and nature identified by Ricardo Rozzi (2013). In this way, matrices were constructed relating the diverse perspectives presented by sociocultural groups with the types of relationships of Berghofer et al. and the barriers identified by Rozzi. The analysis of the matrices showed the existence of integral relationships, but that in any case they presented limitations in the relationship with nature associated with the proposed barriers. In addition, it allowed to detect how the biocultural catalysts mentioned are disseminated through: (i) participation and development of public policies, (ii) conversation and learning sessions, (iii) management of audiovisual media and the internet, and (iv) activities outdoor learning and ecological awareness. These means by which biocultural catalysts operate are fundamental to a biocultural ethical orientation that catalyzes democratic relationships that contribute to overcoming the physical and cognitive barriers imposed by global society since the Great Acceleration. Therefore, this study developed in Puerto Williams and the proposal of biocultural catalysts could contribute to forging new pathways for the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, and their interrelationships....
