Análisis de huellas de uso de instrumentos líticos de Toba del sitio Tulán-54 (Norte de Chile))

Abstract

Se presenta un estudio funcional de los instrumentos de toba del sitio Tulán-54, asentamiento de carácter ceremonial del periodo Formativo Temprano (ca. 3500 - 1500 cal. AP) ubicado en Quebrada Tulán, al sur de la cuenca del Salar de Atacama. La toba en Quebrada Tulán se encuentra en grandes canteras cercanas al sitio Tu-54, las que fueron intensamente explotadas para la producción de artefactos que fueron trasladados y usados en el sitio, en particular instrumentos de tecnología laminar de baja formatización. Se buscó comprender la función y uso efectivo de estos instrumentos a través del análisis de sus huellas de uso. Para esto, se diseñó y aplicó un programa de experimentación y análisis de las piezas por medio de microscopía óptica de bajo y alto aumento, contrastando las observaciones efectuadas sobre una muestra de instrumentos provenientes del sitio. Los resultados dan cuenta de una amplia variedad de funciones y usos de los instrumentos de toba en el sitio de Tulán-54 -incluyendo algunas hasta ahora insospechadas-, permitiendo entender de mejor forma el papel de esta materia prima en las actividades desarrolladas en este temprano asentamiento ceremonial.

This paper presents a functional study of lithic tuff tools from the Tu-54 site, a ceremonial settlement from the early Formative period (ca. 3500 - 1500 cal. BP) located in Quebrada Tul??n, at the southern end of the Salar de Atacama basin. The tuff in Quebrada Tul??n is found in large quarries which were intensively exploited for the production of blade tools that were transported and used at the site. We sought to understand the function and effective use of these instruments by analyzing their use-wear traces. We devised and applied a program of experimentation and analysis of the pieces by means of low and high magnification optical microscopy, contrasting our observations with those made of a tool sample from the site. The results show a wide variety of functions and uses for the tuff instruments at the Tul??n-54 site, including some unsuspected ones, allowing for a better understanding of the role of this raw material in the activities undertaken at this early ceremonial settlement.
