Abstract
dc.description.abstract

Abstract
Sex estimation is an elementary part of the process of identification and construction of the biological profile of skeletonized human remains. Bones traditionally used for sex estimation, such as the pelvis and skull, are often found fragmented or incomplete in forensic and archaeological contexts. Because of this, it is necessary to explore other methodologies for human identification. In the present study, a new methodology for estimating sex in the modern Chilean population was developed using the calcaneus. Ten metric variables were evaluated in a sample of 200 individuals (108 male and 92 female) from the Colección Subactual de Santiago (Universidad de Chile) and logistic regression was used to build predictive models of the sex of the individuals. The results showed that the models that included measurements of breadth and/or joint facets are the best sex estimators, reaching 80% for the univariate model, and 81% for multivariate models, with general accuracy and low bias due to sex. It can be stated that the calcaneus is sexually dimorphic and it is useful for sexual estimation in modern Chilean population.
