Abstract | dc.description.abstract | In this work was studied the removal of heavy metals Cd(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions that simulate polluted wastewaters, using an sorption process by means of a) polymeric microcapsules that retain in their structures non-specific organic extractants and b) using nano-structured calcium silicate compounds.
The synthesis of microcapsules was conducted by means of an in situ radicalary polymerisation process using the monomers styrene and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and the extractants PC–88A (an alkyl phosphonic acid) and Aliquat 336 (a quaternary ammonium salt). The uptake process of these metallic ions from the aqueous solutions would be governed by a chemisorption mechanism onto the surface of the microcapsules through ion-exchange chemical reactions of the acid extractant with the Cd(II) ions and that of Aliquat 336 with the anionic species of Cr(VI). The nano-structured calcium silicate compounds were prepared using a simple and low-cost process using as initial reagents liquid Na2SiO3 and Ca(OH)2. The synthesis generates a nano-structure having a huge surface area and that allows the removal of several metallic cations through the formed hydroxil and poly-silanol groups and that would also permit the uptake of some anions by means of the produced Ca2+ ions.
The microcapsules and the calcium silicates were characterized from a physical, chemical and morphological point of view using different analytical methodologies including the use of scanning electronic microscopy and X-rays difraction. Afterwards, it were conducted several metallurgical sorption tests with both types of sorbents by contacting them with aqueous solutions having different contents of several cations and anions, which simulate industrial wastewaters. The sorption tests were conducted using in batch-reactors and using continuous columns, being the extent of the process monitored by analyzing the concentration of the metallic ions by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
As a global conclusion, it can be said that both sort of sorbents (the polymeric microcapsules and the nano-structured calcium silicates) are very efficient and complementary between them, which turn them in interesting and attractive alternative methodologies to be employed in the treatment of industrial wastewaters contaminated with various types of ionic pollutants.
