Abstract

El Estero El lngenio es impactado directamente en un sector de su curso fluvial por la Compañía Minera Panulcillo, S.A., ubicada en Ovalle, cuyas instalaciones se sitúan 5 km al norte de Ovalle, en el borde occidental del estero El lngenio, que fluye de NE a SW con un caudal entre t y 8 m3/min y cuya cuenca tiene 241 km2, alterando considerablemente la flora y fauna de éste y sus alrededores. La contaminación se debe, a que en sus inicios en el año 1987 la industria minera Panulcillo, vertía directamente desechos al estero (proceso de lixiviación en pilas y piscinas de evaporación no revestidas), el que se fue impactando a través de los años. En e[ año 2002, la empresa puso en funcionamiento la Planta de Biotratamiento de residuos, Laboratorio JICA, con la que se disminuyó en gran cantidad (primero en un 50 % y luego en su totalidad) la contaminación hacia el estero El Ingenio. Aún así, hay filtración y escurimiento de residuos, desde piscinas de evaporación, lixiviación, tranques de relave, etc., produciendo la oxidación de la pirita, pudiendo ver en el estero una coloración amarillo rojiza tanto de sus aguas y sedimentos, disminución del pH 1.5-3 (aguas con ácido sulfúrico) y precipitación de hidróxidos férricos, y encontrando metales pesados como Cd, Pb, As, Hg, Mn, Cu, Zn, Mo y Fe, este último en muy altas concentraciones.
