Abstract

This seminar was developed in the Faculs of Chemistry and Biology of the Universi§
of santiago of ch¡le and its objective was to establish the importance of the relation of
mobile sources with the nitrophenol emission present in the atmosphere of the city
centre zone of the c¡ty of Santiago of Chile.
During April and September 2013, air sampling, together with gasoline and Diesel
sampling, obtained from the exhaust pipe of cars located in the Central Station
Commune were performed. (Zone corresponding to Santiago's city center eastern
l¡mit). The sampling system used, consisted in aspiring 10 L/min of aiÍ into a solid
phase extract¡on cartridge. Separation, identification and quantification of phenols and
nitrophenols, was carried out through chromatography HpLC.
The results obtained showed that phenol, as well as its nitrated derivates 2-NF y 4-NF
are released to the atmosphere by mobile sources. The concentration profiles of
phenol in function of the hour of the day the sample was taken, showed a good
conelat¡on w¡th the carbon monoxide levels, thus indicating that they have a common
source, corresponding to vehicles or mobile sources. 2-NF y 4-NF showed no
correlation with carbon monoxide and their daily profiles were not determinant in
indicating a primary or secondary source.
Finally, based upon the obtained results, was possible to conclude that phenols are
emitted to the atmosphere by vehicles with gasoline engines, while the 2-NF and 4-NF
are son emitted by vehicles with veh¡cles w¡th Diesel eng¡nes.
