In 1848, Claude François Brunet Debaines was hired by the Chilean government to lead the construction of the most important public buildings of the country and to organize the first academic course for architecture at the Universidad de Chile. This French architect was the first “Architect of the Government”, position in which he was succeeded by other professionals in the decades that followed. The recognition and professional valorization of architects in the government administration was strengthened with the foundation, in 1887, of the Ministry of Industry and Public Works (Ministerio de Industria y Obras Públicas), where a Department of Architecture was created. Both the organization of an educational program and the creation of government positions for architects suggest that the 19th century as the century of the professionalization of architects, in the sense that their work was considered as a noble and necessary one for the progress of the country. While this appears to be an indisputable fact in historiography, it seems pertinent to inquire about the context that made this process possible, the ways in which architects were recognized by the State, and the role that architects fulfilled in establishing the criteria for the valorization of their own work and status. By offering some background of the history of architects in the colonial era and during the 19th century, and through the analysis of sources dated between the 1850’s and the 1880’s and the application of some concepts derived from the field of the sociology of the professions, I will identify some of the strategies that allowed to construct and delimit the architects’ practices and discourses. The object of these strategies was to determine the scope of action of these “new professionals” who expected and were expected to participate actively in the process of Nation-building....

Digital publishing platforms are complex academic communication systems that must incorporate information architecture solutions to enable content access at various levels, including the whole publication and each individual article. In addition, to truly harness the advantages offered by the digital world, such platforms must also offer information discovery functions as well as access to information. The former can be implemented by using hypertextuality and, more specifically, links based on semantic similarity. We present herein a review of the various solutions provided in these regards by five important digital platforms....
