patógenos. Este estudio fue realizado en localidades rurales costeras, cercanas a áreas de conservación de la ecorregión de bosque Valdiviano. Se evaluó la posibilidad de transmisión de patógenos a través de la superposición espacial entre gatos domésticos y...
The domestic cat is one of the most abundant carnivores in the world, being currently one of the most popular pets. Free-ranging domestic cats can affect wildlife in different ways, including disease transmission. This study was conducted in the coastal range of Los Ríos region, Chile, near sensitive areas for conservation in the Valdivian rainforest ecoregion. We evaluated the possibility of pathogen transmission by assessing spatial and temporal overlap between free-ranging domestic cats and kodkods (Leopardus guigna), a native wild felid species, listed as vulnerable (IUCN), where pathogens may pose a potential threat for their populations. We monitored 49 cats with GPS devices to assess the presence of owned free-ranging domestic cats in guigna’s habitat. The results show, coupled with information available for L. guigna, that there is spatial and temporal overlap between both species, thus facilitating pathogen transmission. Domestic cats in this study had variable home range areas, ranging from 0.9 to 45.5 hectares. The maximum distance recorded from the household was 2 kilometers, whereas the maximum distance into guigna’s habitat was of 1.3 kilometers. Seasonality, house density and cat density were identified as being associated with the spatial use of free-ranging cats. Home ranges were higher in autumn-winter, while they were negatively correlated with house density. Maximum distances recorded from the household were also higher in autumn-winter, while they were negatively correlated with cat density. We characterized the cat population in the area, which was abundant, with a mean of three cats per house. Low percentages of reproductive control were registered (13.1%), with deficient sanitary management, lacking vaccines or antiparasitic treatment (85.7%). Most of the cats had a local origin (89.2%), indicating low immigration rates. To reduce the risk of pathogen spillover from domestic cats to wildlife, we recommend promoting responsible ownership of domestic cats, ensuring the use of vaccines and antiparasitic treatment, and controlling cat movements. Furthermore, reproductive control and vaccination campaigns may be successful, due to the low immigration observed in this population. Moreover, it is urgent to assess a registry of domestic cat populations near sensitive conservation areas in Chile, to establish population management measures, and mitigating their impacts in wildlife...
