Medication use carries risks, either due to adverse events or lack of compliance. Drug related problems (DRPs) can occur with varying degrees of severity and this can result in an emergency department (ED) visit. The aim of the study was to determine the proportion of PRMs that motivate the consultation to ED in patients 18 years of age or older. A prospective observational study in the SU of a university hospital was carried out between April and December 2015. The information was collected through a tab and the cases were subsequently analyzed by a multidisciplinary team. The DRPs were classified according to the methodology of the University of Minnesota. Other variable evaluated was the change in compliance with pharmacotherapy in patients who reported taking medications on a regular basis, using Morisky-Green-Levine test during the consultation in the ED and 30 days post discharge by telephone call. A total of 994 patients were studied, 61% were women and the mean age was 50 ± 20 years. Of the 943DRPs detected at admission, 195 (20.7%) were DRPs that motivated the consultation to the ED. Compliance with pharmacotherapy increased more tan 180%, from 32% to admission to the consultation to 60% at 30 days after discharge. Future multicenter studies could assess reality in other regional/national settings and compare results with public and private centers...
