Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PACs) are organic pollutants produced by the incomplete combustion of organic matter. In the atmosphere, these compounds can be studied through passive sampling, which is based on the principle of diffusion of the analytes towards the capturing substrate (PSM: Passive Sampling Medium) to obtain the environmental sample. The diffusion of PACs from the atmosphere to the PSM is explained by the kinetic theory of equilibrium between both phases. This mathematical capture function (first-order rate law) has been continuously refined, allowing accurate quantification of the ambient concentration from the captured mass of the analyte in the PSM. To capture PACs in the Santiago city basin, personal and fixed passive sampling campaigns were deployed. The first with a perspective on the capture of PACs according to the lifestyle of twelve participants or users residing in the same house, on the other hand, the second with a focus on the spatial distribution of PACs in the atmosphere of specific points in the city of Santiago de Chile.. In addition, a comparative analysis was addressed in the presence of PACs in the atmosphere of Santiago, according to the application or not of sanitary measures by COVID-19. The PSM of the fixed passive sampling corresponded to polyurethane foam (PUF disc), while for the personal passive sampling it was siloxane (silicone bracelets), on the other hand, the PACs of interest in this work are: Fluorene, Phenanthrene, Anthracene, Fluoranthene, Pyrene, Retene and Chrysene. The cleaning, extraction, fractionation and analysis methods for both types of PSM were successful. The recoveries in PUF discs (34% to 143%) and silicone bracelets (49% to 83%), were for 5 of the 7 PACs studied in the medium polarity fraction. The sum of the captured mass of each analyte according to PSM type, ranged between 1.2 and 15.5 μg for PUF discs, and between 6.8 and 150 μg for silicone bracelets. The estimation of the environmental concentration through the application of the catchment equation, accounts for different environmental concentrations depending on the sampling point, confirming the existence of spatial differences of PACs in the city of Santiago. The geographic distribution of the sum of the analytes in the city of Santiago showed higher concentrations in the northwestern area and lower ones in the eastern area. This would respond to the ventilation dynamics of the basin and the distribution of mobile sources. Significant intra-household differences in the emission of PACs were evidenced with personal passive sampling, where very dissimilar results were observed in the environmental concentration for bracelets in individuals belonging to the same household, confirming the importance of lifestyle in exposure routes. Important differences were also found in the environmental concentration between fixed and personal collectors according to the sampling point. Highlighting the points near Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins avenue and the central highway General Velásquez. Regarding the application of COVID-19 sanitary measures, these were reflected in the environmental concentration of PACs in the city of Santiago. Higher concentrations were observed in the post-quarantine period (warm season) than in quarantine (cold season). This phenomenon can be linked to the decrease in mobile sources during confinement. Methodological changes such as a thinner stationary phase capillary column, reduction of the silica mass in sample fractionation, as well as measurements of oxidative potential in samples. Are future projections that will allow obtaining more defined chromatographic signals, reduction analysis time and understanding of toxicity in samples....
