The aim of the present work is to develop a marine-coastal water quality index to evaluate the state of the marine water resource of the chilean ecoregions, allowing a physicochemical analysis of the water considering the diverse ecosystems of the country. For the realization of the index, the dataset of 2017 was provided by the Programa de Observación del Ambiente Litoral (POAL) of the Chilean Navy, which has monitoring stations throughout the country. To begin to develop the index is necessary a bibliographic reviewe of different indexes used worldwide, this is performed to see the methodologies used. Then the physicochemical parameters are selected considering the bibliography checked in addition to the parameters that were measured by the POAL. The parameters considered are: dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, fecal coliforms, and total suspended solids. Then, the quality curves or sub-indices of each parameter are defined, this was done by the bibliographic review, national and international normatives. In addition, the weight or importance value of each parameter has within the index is assigned. The weight assigned for each parameter was 0.2, being the sum of all parameters: 1. After this, we proceed to unify the sub-indices of each parameter in a mathematical formula proposed by Cooper. Then, the rating scale of the index is defined in 5 categories: excellent (quality between: 91-100), good (quality between: 71-90), reasonable (quality between: 51-70), contaminated (quality between: 26- 50) and highly contaminated (quality between: 10-25), this was based on the Cooper index. Finally, the marine-coastal waters quality index was tested by ecoregions. According to this proposal, the qualities obtained in the ecoregion were in the range between 45 to 87 in the ecorregión of Paposo Taltal and Magallanes. This indicates that in general Chile presents a quality listed as reasonable by Cooper, indicating that quality can be improved at low cost. The ecoregions with the worst quality are Norte Grande, Atacama, Los molles and Chile Central, is due to the mining activity in the area, this is where the national production of the phosphate rock is located, this causes that in these places a high amount of phosphates is occurs, producing eutrophication in the ocean, which leads to an affectation to the quality of the other parameters such as: dissolved oxygen, this is because when the algae are degraded dissolved oxygen is consumed, and solids suspended, since with the mining production they move by the wind to the oceans....
