Light pollution has been widely reported as a problem factor for the environment. In nocturnal and crepuscular insects, negative effects have been reported on their reproduction and life history, increased mortality, accompanied by disruption or alteration in the population dynamics and the trophic networks where they are involved. This has had an impact on the biodiversity of these insects in areas affected by this type of pollution. However, despite the fact that excess light could also correspond to a source of stress, affecting the quality and quantity of rest in different diurnal species, little is known about this issue, and it is possible to suggest the existence of negative effects of this pollution in the rest of animals of diurnal habits. In this study, the physiological consequences of exposure to artificial light during the resting period of Astylus trifasciatus (Coleoptera), a diurnal melirid native to central Chile, were evaluated. Individuals of A. trifasciatus were maintained in two experimental treatments: continuous light (24h), or light / dark cycle (14h: 12h), to determine if there are effects due to continuous exposure to artificial light on its rest period over physiological parameters such as: i) their metabolism (CO2 production) at rest during the night (both in light and dark conditions), ii) their performance (where the walking speed was recorded at temperatures between 5 to 40 ° C), both after one week of exposure, iii) its preferential temperature (in a gradient between 10 to 50 ° C ± 5 ° C), after two weeks of exposure, and iv) the number of days of survival from the beginning of the treatments (i.e. longevity). Contrary to expectations, no effects were found on the physiological parameters measured. However, the continuous exposure to artificial light during the resting period of A. trifasciatus had a significant effect on its longevity, where those that were maintained with a normal light / dark cycle lived longer than those exposed to continuous light. Therefore, the relevance of these findings under the framework of the global decline of insects is discussed, being important to analyze more widely the effects on the longevity of individuals through experiments where they are exposed for different periods of time to a light disturbance, and even to different levels of disturbance, or to individuals in populations with different levels of exposure in nature....
