The transformations experienced by the society have strongly impacted the role of the medical profession in the world. Various factors such as technological progress and knowledge, globalization, massive access to information, market, policy and health systems determine a new and changing scenario for the practice of medicine. For several decades, there has been a growing concern from various medical schools worldwide to strengthen the teaching of medical students on contents related to professionalism, in order to prepare more efficiently future doctors. Since these students are supposed to successfully face the challenge to develop in this new context without abandoning the principles of hippocratic medicine, which for centuries have guided the exercise of the profession in the West. Although there are different interpretations and definitions for medical professionalism, there is consensus that involves humanitarian attitudes and behaviors that complement scientific and technical formation of excellence, which is framed in ethics and privilege above all the patients’ welfare. The present thesis reviewed literature makes reference to various proposals to approach teaching and curricular introduction of medical professionalism. Most researchers raise the need to incorporate medical professionalism transversely in the curriculum using a variety of methodologies at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Besides the teaching of medical professionalism, the institutional commitment is also a relevant element. Such commitment must involve all the actors in the process of formation; because isolated initiatives without the commitment will not reach meaningful outcomes. This educational research aims to help improve professionalism in teaching undergraduates at the Medical School of the Catholic University of Maule. The study focuses on describing the coherence between the vision of professionalism that emerges from the formation project of the career and the students and teachers’ perception upon it. The research methodology corresponds to a descriptive, qualitative model, and the data collection was developed through in-depth interviews and focus group with a selected group of students and teachers. The main topics which are considered are: the concept of medical professionalism; methodologies and learning contexts in relation to the declared formative project, and its implementation and development throughout the formation process. From the study, it is expected to obtain relevant information to design and develop new strategies for teaching medical professionalism that complements the current curriculum....

The low adherence of patients to treatment is an obstacle to achieving favorable clinical results. 50% of patients with access to medication do not adhere to treatment and the causes are multifactorial. Pharmaceutical interventions (PIs) based on clinical education improve patient compliance. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of pharmaceutical education on compliance with pharmacological treatment in patients hospitalized in an internal medicine service (IMS) of a high complexity hospital. Methodology: This study compared adherence to treatment before and after through a prospective experimental study of educational PIs performed during hospitalization by a chemistry and pharmacy (C&P) intern with the support of the IMS clinical team. The PIs were personalized, continuous and focused on medication review, identification of barriers to compliance and pharmaceutical education of patients and/or relatives in charge of their medication. Compliance was measured with the 8-question Morisky Scale (MMAS-8) and barriers to compliance were measured with the Brief Medication Questionnaire (BMQ). Adherence and potential barriers were evaluated at hospitalization, and 30 days after discharge through a pharmacotherapeutic follow-up phone call. All patients admitted to the SMI between August and December 2019 who met the selection criteria were included. The outcome variable corresponded to the variation in compliance with treatment over time, depending on whether it improved, worsened, or remained the same, with respect to the baseline of each patient. Results: 106 patients were recruited during hospitalization, where 87 (82.1%) patients completed the study, the remaining 19 patients were lost to follow-up mainly due to death. Those included in the study had a mean age of 66.3±15.5 years. The majority (57.5%) were women and 52.0% were older adults. The patients used an average of 6.3±3.4 chronically used drugs before hospitalization, and 64.4% had polypharmacy (5 or more drugs). According to the MMAS-8 scale, 56.0% of the patients had "low compliance" to treatment prior to hospitalization and "high adherence" (55.0%) during follow-up. Compliance was significantly improved by 72.0% (p<0.05) at 43 days after discharge. The main barriers to compliance were those associated with memory, therapeutic regimen, and health beliefs. After the PIs, those related to the therapeutic regimen improved by 53.0% (p<0.05). Conclusion: PIs based on continuous and personalized pharmacotherapeutic education in charge of a C&P intern, significantly increased adherence to treatment and decreased barriers to compliance associated with the therapeutic regimen investigated in patients hospitalized in the IMS of a high complexity hospital...
