In Chile, mining is one of the more invasive environmental economic activities, so as to minimize the negative impacts, there is a law regulating mine closure (Law 20551) and a set of methodologies created by SERNAGEOMIN to guide companies in developing of their closure plans. The law includes a postclosure stage for monitoring and maintenance of closing measures. However, there is no methodology for planning and management of postclosure. This implies a problem for companies because they can incur in unnecessary costs or underestimate the postclosure by not considering enough activities. On the other hand, SERNAGEOMIN, as auditor, could approve postclosure plans with insufficient funds or weak development planning and management in perpetuity. This paper proposed a methodology for creating postclosure plans to complement closure plans. For that, it was necessary to review protocols of existing SERNAGEOMIN and foreign closure plans, classification systems of contaminated sites and risk assessment techniques. Then, using the concepts of assessment and risk management, cost and quality in projects, the minimum information was established to create, plan, organize and manage the activities of the postclosure, evaluate their costs and integrate it to the evaluation stage of mining projects. The result of this process was a methodology that guides and informs the user about the information needed for planning, evaluation and management of postclosure plans. The process starts with a classification system for future potential hazards of wastes and mining remnants and closure measures, from which postclosure activities are planned considering environmental aspects. The total obtained scores of the classification system of contaminated sites has a 70% weight in potential hazards that can be prevented and 30% in aspects of mitigation of these in closure and postclosure, this means that the result depends more on the establishment of objectives that (before and during operation) reduce the risks of potential environmental impacts before creating more and better postclosure measures, because the consequence of this is an increase in the costs and risks associated with this stage. In addition, the methodology proposed in this paper takes into account new information that current planning of the closure plans had not been considered, this increases the costs of postclosure by at least 50%, but in turn, may decrease uncertainty and risk in the implementing of this stage by a similar percentage. This proposal is an important support for project planning that prioritizes the investigation and remediation of future contaminated mining sites. There is an improvement in the planning and management of the closure to complement it with the methodology of postclosure. This proposal also integrates the technical and economic capacity to deal with changes or evolutions in the closure plans and assimilate them, updating cost estimates and achieving a more transparent and self-sustainable management of the postclosure. However, it is recommended to propose tools that measure the physical progress of the postclosure stage during its execution, by controlling costs and quality to make good use of the resources. Also, it is recommended to find a method to integrate the environmental variable quantitatively to the block in a mining block model valuation to facilitate the calculation of the amount of environmental impact and uncertainty and risk analysis in projects evaluation....
