Looking at the Chilean architectural heritage, we thought about old buildings with a specific architectural style that portrays a forgotten historical period. Is it usual to recall mansions in the city, a landlord’s house or religious constructions spread throughout the Chilean territory. But heritage as a track about a past act is much more than an object and architectural style. Time and space go by and nowadays they are introduced as evidence from a past world, acts, actions and people. It could be interpreted as a “fragment belonging to History, and therefore, a cultural information bearer. It could be conceived as a literary piece, a text where to read such History”. For that reason, to understand heritage only as an object is a mistake; is much more than an architectural enveloping where past actions were developed, it is a material support and foundation where human’s identities were developed in History based on tasks, every day routines from those times, under an specific architecture and until today, that material support and foundation are alive and fragile at the same time. But if the architectural heritage is more than an object fact, then what else represents a ruin? Currently, if we observed our quotidian in any chilean city and look at the kinds of architecture that stand out, most of them survive due to restorations done by private groups and the State, being most of them religious or residential properties. On the contrary, all heritage associated with livability: industries, factories, train stations or sheds are currently undervalued and invisibilized in any Chilean city. Taking into account the previous paragraph, there is a particular case to go in depth, given its importance in the territorial construction in the country, its role in the connection among cities and for being protagonist in the economic development for almost a century: the railroad. This sistem that carried passengers and productives supplies became essential to motivate the Chilean territory construction, to the foundations of new cities and to be a trigger in the urban aspect evolution. The railroad was the main agent in the Chilean towns, and to understand the role that it had in that time, it becomes as relevant as any other kind of architectural typology related to production. Therefore, it is evident that believing that such railroad heritage had a similar ending compared to other forms of productive patrimony: a progressive abandoned, due to new ways of transportation, the overtaking of urban growth and technological development. Those actions, as with any already patrimony preexistence, offer specific architectural attributions that can be taken into account and be rescued thanks to certain factors. But, what would happen if that railroad preexistence will exist in small cities, with minor urban growth, a slow social mobility, an small scale economy and even a rural expresion aiming at an slow but inevitable disappearing process?...
