The differential use of thermal favorable microhabitats may lead to irnportant savings in the daily and seasonal energetic budgets by reducing the thermoregulatory cost of the orgarusm. Different investigations have been conducted in birds, relating microhabitat utilization during the day and the energy savings that this activity implies. But very few studies analyze the importance of microhabitats when selecting nests, and the relevance that this may have on adults and chicks. In this work, we determine the mode that the thermal environment affects (adults and chicks ) of Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) nesting in different sites. Types of morpho-functional and behavioral responses to different thermal environments utilized while nesting were also evaluated. This work was carried out in Isla Pájaro Niño, Algarrobo, Central Chile In this location S. humboldti presents basically two nesting environments: The first one is rocks (where penguins use natural caves or crevices to build their nests ) and the second is dirt, where they borrows in which they build their nests. Results indicate that during spring and summer the temperature of borrows are significantly higher than those built in rocks. A significant increase in body temperature was found in adults nesting in burrows when those reach the maximum temperatures .. The upper normothermic limit lays between 24 and 26°C of ambient temperature. No behavioral changes were detected in nesting adults in dirt caves to avoid heat stress. On the other hand, chicks in burrows showed a faster growth rate and an earlier acquisition of thermoregulatory mechanisms. Moreover, they had a lower mortality rate than those nesting in rocks. From these data it was concluded that the cave's temperature affects adults and chicks in different ways. Adults nesting in burrows maxirnize their abilities for heat loss, but increase their body temperature. Survival and growth rate of chicks are favored by the high temperatures prevailing in these micro-environments....
