(Chile.

The objective of this study was to elaborate and characterize nutritionally housefly larva meal (Musca domestica) to become a potential food/feed ingredient. The housefly larvae were obtained from guano extracted from a commercial laying hen farm. The meal was prepared by a simple oven-drying and milling method. The meal was characterized by proximal chemical analysis, mineral composition, amino acid profile, amino acid score, fatty acid profile and microbiological analysis. The crude protein and the ether extract contents of the meal were high at 54% and 22%, respectively. The crude fiber content was 6.0% and the ash content was 7.6%. The Ca/P ratio is about 1:1. Also presented a high content of essential amino acids such as lysine (2.2%), cysteine (2.2%) and leucine (1.7%). The fatty acid profile was 31.5% saturated and 68.4% unsaturated fatty acids, with oleic (7.2%), palmitic (5,1%) and linoleic (3.5%) acids observed in decreasing order. The microbiological analysis indicated that meal could become a safe food ingredient for use in animal feed (mesophilic aerobes of 1.7 x 103 CFU/g, coliform level < 10 CFU/g and no Salmonella spp. was found). In conclusion, by a simple method insect meal was obtained with excellent nutritional quality and microbiological characteristics compatible for its use as a feed ingredient....

of the expression of IL-12. An overall effect of the HF diet on plasma IFN-gamma was observed, specifically a decrease in animals fed the HFD. An interaction between diet and extract treatment was observed over plasma IL-12. The treatment used modulates markers...
Obesity has been identified as a risk factor for severity of respiratory infections. Thus, the support of the immune response in obese subjects is of interest. The present work evaluated the effect of the consumption of a calafate extract on markers of the immune response in lean and obese mice. Male C57BL/6J mice were exposed for 82 days to a standard or a highfat diet (HFD). A subgroup of both groups was given 50 and 100 mg [total polyphenols]/kg body weight/day of extract in the last two weeks. Gene expression and secretion of immune response markers were evaluated in lung tissue and plasma. An effect of extract treatment on IFN-ϓ expression was observed. Effects induced by the HFD and treatment with extract were observed independent of the expression of IL-12. An overall effect of the HF diet on plasma IFN-ϓ was observed, specifically a decrease in animals fed the HFD. An interaction between diet and extract treatment was observed over plasma IL-12. The treatment used modulates markers that activate the immune response to respiratory infections, mainly of viral origin, in lean and obese animals....
