Abstract

Traditional explanations about the functions of religion are insufficient. Normally, the functions ascribed to religion by different theoretical frameworks are indistinctly performed by other subsystems. However, in Luhman's perspective, religion performs an irreplaceable function; it transforms indetermination into certainty.
