Ornamento y significación en la pintura mural colonial: la representación vegetal en iglesias rurales de Oruro

Abstract

El departamento de Oruro cuenta con una cantidad importante de iglesias coloniales que conservan las pinturas murales realizadas en el contexto de la evangelización, caracterizadas por la profusión de ornamentación vegetal. Esta investigación profundiza en algunas semejanzas y diferencias de cinco de estos templos rurales, buscando en sus motivos fitomórficos la variedad de connotaciones simbólicas, referenciales y rituales que puedan haber influido en su producción, como también en su posterior resignificación por parte de los participantes locales de esta comunicación religiosa. Se indaga en la configuración de un lenguaje visual acorde con un cristianismo andino dieciochesco, que traspasa los límites entre figura y ornamento, entre referencialidad y experiencia.

There is an important amount of colonial churches in the Department of Oruro that preserve the mural paintings made within the context of the evangelization. They are abundant with a vegetal form of ornamentation. This research delves into some similarities and differences of five of these rural temples, searching in their phitomorphic motives the diversity of symbolic, referential and ritual connotations that may have influences their making, as well as their subsequent resignifying process of the local participants of this religious communication. It inquires into the configuration of a visual language in compliance with an 18th century Andean Christianity, one that trespasses the limits between figure and ornament, between reference and experience.
