Liberalización comercial de servicios y sus efectos en el crecimiento económico

Abstract

Utilizando datos de corte transversal de 44 países de 2010 a 2015, esta tesis realiza una prueba empírica sobre el efecto umbral de la relación entre la liberalización del comercio de servicios de telecomunicaciones, financieros y de transportes y el desarrollo económico medido como crecimiento del PIB per cápita. Los resultados muestran que en los países con un ingreso per cápita inferior al umbral (US$ 22,741), la liberalización del comercio de servicios de telecomunicaciones y de transportes aumentará el crecimiento económico; no se encuentra evidencia de una relación significativa para los países que superan el mismo umbral. Con respecto al sector de servicios financieros, los resultados se revierten: hay evidencia de una relación negativa y significativa entre la apertura y el crecimiento para los países con un ingreso per cápita inferior al umbral, lo contario ocurre en el caso de los servicios financieros en aquellos en que el ingreso per cápita es mayor que el valor umbral. La mayoría de los países con un ingreso per cápita superior al umbral se encuentran en Norteamérica y Europa, mientras que la mayoría de los países con un ingreso per cápita inferior al umbral se encuentran en Latinoamérica, Asia y Sudáfrica.

Using cross-section data from 44 countries, between 2010 and 2015, this thesis presents an empirical test on the threshold effect of the relationship between the liberalization of trade in telecommunications, financial, transport services and economic development measured as GDP growth per capita. The results show that in countries with an income per capita below the threshold (US$22,741), the liberalization of trade in telecommunications and transport services will increase economic growth and no evidence of a significant relationship is found for countries that exceed the same threshold. Regarding the financial services sector, the results are reversed: there is evidence of a negative and significant relationship between openness and growth for countries with per capita income below the threshold, the opposite occurs in the case of financial services in those in which the per capita income is greater than the threshold value. Most countries with a per capita income above the threshold are found in North America and Europe, while most countries with a per capita income below the threshold are found in Latin America, Asia and South Africa.
