Abstractdc.description.abstractThe olive scolitid Hylesinus oleiperda (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) larvae bore olive branches sub - cortically, causing wilting and death in productive twigs. According to Chilean literature, H. oleiperda is considered a minor pest. However, some olive growers in the VI and VII Regions have reported an increasing incidence of the olive scolitid, requiring the implementation of control strategies. Chemical control using insecticides against the adults has been proposed as an alternative, but it requires knowledge of the respective periods of emergence, flight, and wood colonization. Because of that, a study was conducted between August 2011 and March 2012, in a severally infested olive orchard of Pencahue Valley, VII Region. Every ca. three weeks, heavily infested branches (5 lineal m/time) from olives cv. Barnea were collected. The twigs were checked in the laboratory and their length, diameter, and the number of adults emergence holes, were all recorded. Afterwards, the bark of the twigs was removed to count the number of larvae, pupae, and adults. Results reveal the following: larvae were permanently present during the sampling period; pupal chambers appear from the third week of October and the pupal stage was only observed during the first half of November. From November through the last weeks of December, adult emergence was observed. The female bores the twig usually at some branching, where it builds the maternal chamber, laying eggs inside. Even no eggs were found, very small larvae were observed between December and February. Those larvae bore galleries originated at the maternal chamber. According to these data, a 1-generation cycle per season should occur in the area. Between November and December the adults would be exposed to residual insecticide spray on the wood.es_ES
