EL auge del panarabismo en el mundo árabe y su impacto en las comunidades árabes en Chile (1918-1967)

Abstract

El auge del panarabismo, ocurrido en el mundo árabe fundamentalmente entre 1948 y 1967, se caracterizó por la hegemonía de una ideología nacionalista y por el esfuerzo por rearticular y unir aquellos espacios otrora controlados y fraccionados por el colonialismo europeo. El concepto de una nación árabe indisoluble y del necesario despertar de la conciencia de unidad y su concreción política y económica, se convirtieron en el objetivo fundamental de toda una generación. Dichas ideas impactaron y fueron resignificadas por las comunidades árabes asentadas en Chile, que mantenían lazos y vínculos con sus sociedades de origen, y se manifestaron en sus discursos y acciones; en el surgimiento de instituciones de la colectividad, y en la tendencia a unificar estas últimas por sobre los regionalismos, siguiendo los principios y valores que el nacionalismo árabe difundía. El presente artículo aborda el impacto del nacionalismo árabe en los inmigrantes árabes y sus descendientes en Chile, así como los significados construidos por ellos en torno a aquel, primero esbozando su gradual emergencia en el período de consolidación colonial entre 1918 y 1948, y luego analizando su etapa hegemónica.

The rise of pan-Arabism, which occurred in the Arab world mainly between 1948 and 1967, was characterized by both the hegemony of a nationalist ideology and the effort to rearticulate and unite those spaces once controlled and divided by European colonialism. The concept of an indissoluble Arab nation and the necessary awakening of unity consciousness and its political and economic concretion, became the fundamental objective of an entire generation. These ideas impacted and were resignified by the Arab communities settled in Chile, since they maintained ties with their societies of origin, manifesting themselves in the discourses, actions, the emergence of institutions of the community and the tendency to unify them over the regionalisms, following the principles and values that Arab nationalism spread. This article addresses the impact and meanings constructed by Arab immigrants and their descendants in Chile around Arab nationalism, first outlining their gradual emergence in the period of colonial consolidation between 1918 and 1948 and then analyzing their hegemonic stage.
