Determinación de glucemia en perros callejeros en la provincia de Santiago, a través de la comparación de glucómetros portátiles con el método estándar

Abstract

Para realizar mediciones de glucemia en los perros existen distintos métodos, de los cuales los más utilizados son: el Método Estándar que requiere un gran volumen de sangre del paciente, lo cual en su obtención produce un nivel elevado de estrés y sus resultados deben ser procesados en un laboratorio, lo que requiere un mayor tiempo. Por otra parte, están los Glucómetros Portátiles, los cuales tienen la gran ventaja de requerir un volumen pequeño de sangre, de esta forma se disminuye el estrés en los pacientes y sus resultados se obtienen de forma inmediata. Entre estos existen los Glucómetros Portátiles Veterinarios específicos para la especie canina y los Glucómetros Portátiles Humanos. Sin embargo, en Chile no existen estudios donde se comparen las mediciones de estos Glucómetros Portátiles con el Método Estándar en la población de perros callejeros, la cual es la más abundante en la Provincia de Santiago, siendo este el principal objetivo de este trabajo. En este estudio, se utilizaron 45 perros callejeros que cumplían con los requisitos propuestos, ser animales clínicamente sanos, no presentar anormalidades en los exámenes complementarios, poseer una condición corporal normal entre 2/5 a 4/5, entre otros. Así, con una única muestra de sangre se obtuvieron valores de glucemia a través del Método Estándar y de los Glucómetros Portátiles. A partir de los resultados obtenidos con cada uno de los métodos, se realizó un análisis estadístico descriptivo, una prueba comparativa Análisis de la Varianza y a posteriori el Test de Tukey, además se realizó una correlación lineal de Pearson entre los distintos métodos. Con los resultados obtenidos se puede establecer que los tres métodos de determinación utilizados son distintos y no comparables entre sí, teniendo diferencias estadísticamente significativas al comparar sus medias, y una baja correlación. Estos resultados nos permitirían concluir que los Glucómetros Portátiles pueden ser un buen método para controlar los niveles de glucemia de los pacientes en terreno. Sin embargo, se debe enfatizar en el beneficio de utilizar sólo un Glucómetro y de la misma marca para la determinación de glucosa sanguínea, evaluando cada caso de forma individual y realizando comparaciones periódicas del Glucómetro Portátil en uso con el Método Estándar.

There are different methods to perform blood glucose measurements in dogs, of which the most used are: the Standard Method, requiring a large volume of blood from the patient, which in its extraction produces a high level of stress and whose results must be processed in a laboratory, which requires more time. On the other hand, there are Portable Glucometers, which have the great advantage of requiring a small volume of blood, thus reducing stress in patients and their results are obtained immediately. Among these are the Veterinary Portable Glucometers specific to the canine species and the Human Portable Glucometers. However, in Chile there are no studies comparing the measurements of these Portable Glucometers with the Standard Method in the population of stray dogs, which is the most abundant in the Province of Santiago, being the main objective of this work. In this study, 45 stray dogs were used that met the proposed requirements, being clinically healthy animals, not presenting abnormalities in the complementary exams, having a normal body condition between 2/5 to 4/5, among others. Thus, with a single blood sample, blood glucose values were obtained through the Standard Method and Portable Glucometers. From the results obtained with each of the methods, a descriptive statistical analysis, a comparative analysis of the Variance test and afterwards the Tukey Test were performed; in addition a linear Pearson correlation was performed between the different methods With the results obtained, it can be established that the three determination methods used are different and not comparable to each other, having statistically significant differences when comparing their means, and a low correlation. These results would allow us to conclude that Portable Glucometers can be a good method to control the blood glucose levels of patients on-site. However, the benefit of using only one Glucometer and of the same brand for blood glucose determination should be emphasized, evaluating each case individually and making periodic comparisons of the Portable Glucometer in use to the Standard Method.
