Análisis de la investigación científica de las principales Facultades de Ciencias Forestales de Chile durante el periodo 2014-2019

Abstract

Dentro de la institucionalidad forestal de Chile las universidades cumplen un rol fundamental en la investigación científica. Hasta la fecha, a nivel nacional se han realizado escasos estudios que indiquen cómo se investiga en las Facultades de Ciencias Forestales, y los existentes son más bien antiguos, por lo que el estado del arte no se encuentra actualizado. El presente estudio pretende analizar la investigación científica de las principales Facultades de Ciencias Forestales de Chile durante el periodo 2014-2019, mediante: i. la identificación de la distribución de las áreas de investigación, ii. el análisis de las características de las investigaciones, y iii. el análisis de la pertinencia de los estudios respecto a los principales desafíos forestales de la actualidad. Para lograr los objetivos se determinaron criterios de inclusión de los artículos respecto a contenido y forma. Una vez seleccionados los artículos se les atribuyeron áreas de investigación utilizando como base las propuestas por la “International Union of Forest Research Organizations” (IUFRO) y se les asignó una facultad de procedencia. También, se obtuvieron características de las investigaciones, tales como tipo de ecosistema en el cual se enfocaron los estudios, tipo de especie abordada, fuente de financiamiento externo, entre otras, asociando estas características a las facultades. Además, se realizó un Análisis de Correspondencias Múltiples (ACM), con el propósito de generar una imagen comprensiva de cómo investigan las facultades asociando grupos de variables. Por último, para cada uno de los artículos se determinó si abordaban algunos de los desafíos propuestos en el documento “Política Forestal 2015-2035”, y adicionalmente se registraron otros desafíos emergentes frecuentemente estudiados. Los resultados evidencian una tendencia general a investigar sobre Medio Ambiente Forestal, aunque entre las facultades las tendencias investigativas varían. Algunas facultades son similares respecto a las características de sus investigaciones, las procedentes de la Universidad de Chile, Universidad Austral de Chile, Universidad de la Frontera y Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile tienden a estudiar especies forestales nativas, con financiamiento externo público, las facultades de la Universidad de Talca y Universidad Católica del Maule también presentan características similares entre ellas, y se asocian a investigaciones sobre especies relacionadas a productos forestales no madereros y de arbolado urbano, pero sin un financiamiento externo claro, mientras que la facultad de la Universidad de Concepción presenta características diferenciadas con tendencia a estudiar especies exóticas comerciales madereras con financiamiento externo público. Los desafíos forestales que plantea la Política Forestal 2015-2035 son escasamente abordados, a excepción de la promoción a la dendroenergía. Respecto a otros desafíos evidenciados en la revisión, se debe considerar la integración del cambio climático dentro de los futuros enfoques investigativos.

Whith in Chile’s forestry institutions universities play a fundamental role in scientific research. To date, at the national level there have been few studies that indicate how research is done in the Faculties of Forestry Sciences, and the existing ones are rather old, so the state of the art is not updated. The present study aims to analyze the scientific research of the main Faculties of Forestry Sciences of Chile during the period 2014-2019, through: i. the identification of the distribution of the research areas, ii. the analysis of research characteristics, and iii. the analysis of the relevance of studies to current major forest challenges. Criteria for the inclusion of articles with respect to content and form were identified to achieve the objectives. Once the articles were selected, they were assigned areas of research using as a basis the proposals of the "International Union of Forest Research Organizations" (IUFRO) and were assigned a faculty of origin. Also, characteristics of the research were obtained, such as type of ecosystem in which the studies were focused, type of species addressed, external funding source, among others, associating these characteristics to the faculties. In addition, a Multiple Correspondences Analysis (MCA) was performed, with the purpose of generating a comprehensive image of how faculties investigate associating groups of variables. Finally, for each of the articles it was determined if they addressed some of the challenges proposed in the document "Política Forestal 2015-2035", and in addition other frequently studied emerging challenges were recorded. The results show a general tendency to research on the Forest Environment, although research trends vary among faculties. Some faculties are similar regarding the characteristics of their research, those coming from the Universidad de Chile, Universidad Austral de Chile, Universidad de la Frontera and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile tend to study native forest species, with public external funding, the faculties of the Universidad de Talca and the Universidad Católica del Maule also have similar characteristics, and are associated with research on species related to non-timber forest products and urban woodland, but without clear external financing, while the faculty of the Universidad de Concepción presents differentiated characteristics with a tendency to study commercial exotic timber species with public external financing. The forestry challenges posed by the Política Forestal 2015-2035 are scarcely addressed, except for the promotion of wood energy. Regarding other challenges highlighted in the review, the integration of climate change into future research approaches should be considered.
