Eterno Tatau : expresión tipográfica presente en nuestra piel

Abstract

Este proyecto de título explora el tatuaje tipográfico en Chile como una forma de expresión visual, simbólica y emocional, explorando desde el diseño editorial. La investigación busca visibilizar esta práctica a través del desarrollo de un fotolibro que documente y reflexione sobre los tipos de letra tatuados en la piel de personas chilenas. Desde una perspectiva cualitativa y proyectual, se emplean entrevistas, registros fotográficos y análisis de referentes editoriales para comprender cómo el tatuaje tipográfico comunica identidades, memorias y afectos. La propuesta se sostiene sobre tres ejes fundamentales: el cuerpo como soporte simbólico e identitario, la tipografía como lenguaje visual cargado de significado, y el diseño editorial como medio para articular narrativas visuales íntimas. Se analizan estilos tipográficos, morfología, decisiones compositivas y dimensiones emocionales presentes en los tatuajes, revelando cómo cada letra tatuada es resultado de una elección significativa que combina estética, identidad y recuerdo. El fotolibro resultante no solo funcionará como archivo visual, sino también como objeto narrativo que invite a una lectura sensible del tatuaje tipográfico. A través de una edición cuidada y materialidad reflexiva, se busca reivindicar el valor gráfico y cultural de estas prácticas en el contexto chileno. El proyecto aporta una mirada singular al cruce entre diseño, cuerpo y memoria, contribuyendo a la valoración de un fenómeno poco explorado.

This thesis project explores typographic tattooing in Chile as a form of visual, symbolic, and emotional expression, exploring editorial design from the perspective of editorial design. The research seeks to make this practice visible through the development of a photobook that documents and reflects on the typefaces tattooed on the skin of Chileans. From a qualitative and design perspective, interviews, photographic records, and analysis of editorial references are used to understand how typographic tattooing communicates identities, memories, and emotions. The proposal is based on three fundamental axes: the body as a symbolic and identity-based medium; typography as a visual language charged with meaning; and editorial design as a means of articulating intimate visual narratives. Typographic styles, morphology, compositional decisions, and emotional dimensions present in the tattoos are analyzed, revealing how each tattooed letter is the result of a meaningful choice that combines aesthetics, identity, and memory. The resulting photobook will function not only as a visual archive but also as a narrative object that invites a sensitive reading of typographic tattooing. Through careful editing and thoughtful materiality, the project seeks to vindicate the graphic and cultural value of these practices in the Chilean context. The project offers a unique perspective on the intersection of design, body, and memory, contributing to the appreciation of a phenomenon that has been little explored in the field of graphic design.
