ECO - Espacio de la Cultura y los Oficios de Independencia : reacondicionamiento del ex cine Valencia

Abstract

Muy pronto a la invención del cine como imagen en movimiento, el cine como lugar, empieza a construirse y masificarse en los principales centros urbanos de occidente a inicios del siglo XX, apareciendo como un nuevo paradigma arquitectónico en la ciudad. En el caso de Santiago, fueron cerca de 150 los que han surgido a lo largo y ancho de su desarrollo urbano, siendo espacios importantes para la creación de comunidades y el desarrollo cultural de estas mismas, facilitaron la cohesión social de los sectores poblados donde se ubicaban y consolidaron los barrios en torno a ellos. De esta forma los cines cobraron relevancia no sólo como hitos espaciales y arquitectónicos en sí mismos, sino que también por ser soporte de un abanico diverso de actividades, como obras teatrales, reuniones, mítines políticos y presentaciones artísticas. La gran mayoría de estos espacios que alguna vez fueron un cine, hoy han desaparecido como tal, siendo demolidos, algunos deviniendo en el abandono y otros en una condición de deterioro o subutilización. Considerando que estos edificios tienen una relevancia histórica dotada de una carga de identidad, y que el pasar del tiempo los lleva al punto de ser un enclave de la obsolescencia en la ciudad - o amenaza con su desaparición-, cabe preguntarse ¿Cómo los antiguos cines pueden volver a adaptarse a las condiciones de su contexto y ser nuevamente una pieza funcional en la ciudad contemporánea? El proyecto denominado ECO: ESPACIO DE LA CULTURA Y LOS OFICIOS DE INDEPENDENCIA plantea la posibilidad de reacondicionar el Ex Cine Valencia en la comuna de Independencia. Su condición particular de enfrentarse a un hito urbano como lo es la Plaza Chacabuco, su placa comercial y su volumetría, lo hacen un edificio propicio para proponer una nueva manera de utilizarlo, brindándole un carácter programático diverso y actual. De compartir funciones de cine y teatro, luego albergar una iglesia evangélica para finalmente quedar en desuso en los últimos años, el edificio pasa a ser un lugar de encuentro en torno a los oficios. Aquí las personas pueden disponer de espacios para trabajar en comunidad, aprender estos rubros para ejercerlos o beneficiarse de los mismos. El mundo de la amasandería y de la confección textil, convencionalmente ligados a la historia comercial de la comuna y presente en sus rasgos de identidad, son las principales áreas temáticas en las que girarán los oficios de este nuevo espacio. La estrategia de la propuesta plantea densificar el uso del espacio, conservando la bandeja superior del ex cine, para crear en la parte superior del edificio un cine multiuso acondicionado para poder albergar los antiguos y nuevos usos del edificio, como el cine, presentaciones, conciertos, obras de teatro, culto, entre otros; todo esto intensamente ligado con el espacio público y otorgándole diversos espacios y programas en sus niveles inferiores. En suma, este proyecto busca dejar un precedente de cómo se podrían intervenir los antiguos cines, considerando que se reiteran los casos con características comunes por su contexto, su morfología o tipología, que se encuentran en condiciones y situaciones similares. Se busca que los antiguos cines de Santiago puedan reincorporarse de forma íntegra a la ciudad.

Very soon after the invention of cinema as a moving image, the movie theatre as a place began to be built and massified in the main western urban centers at the beginning of the 20th century, appearing as a new architectural paradigm in the city. In the case of Santiago, about 150 cinemas have emerged throughout its urban development, being important spaces for the creation of communities and their cultural development. In the same line, they facilitated the social cohesion of the populated sectors and consolidated the neighborhoods around them. In this way, cinemas gained relevance not only as spatial and architectural landmarks, but also as a support for a range of activities, such as plays, meetings, political rallies, and artistic presentations. The vast majority of these spaces that were once a movie theatre, today have disappeared, being demolished, becoming abandoned, and others in a condition of deterioration or underutilization. Considering that these buildings have a historical relevance endowed with identity, and that the passing of time takes them to the point of being an enclave of obsolescence in the city - or threatens their disappearance - it is worth asking, how can the old cinemas be re-adapted to the conditions of their context and become once again a functional piece in the contemporary city? The project called ECO - ESPACIO DE LA CULTURA Y LOS OFICIOS DE INDEPENDENCIA raises the possibility of reconditioning the former Cine Valencia in the commune of Independencia. Its particular condition of facing an urban landmark such as Plaza Chacabuco, its commercial plaque and its volumetry, make it an ideal building to propose a new way of using it by giving it a diverse and current programmatic character. From sharing film and theatre functions, then housing an evangelical church, and finally falling into disuse in recent years, the building has become a meeting place for trades. Here people can find spaces to work in community as well as to learn these areas in order to practice them and obtain benefits from them. The world of bakery and textile manufacturing, conventionally linked to the comercial history of the commune and present in its identity features, are the main thematic areas in which the trades of this new space will revolve. The strategy of the proposal is to densify the use of the space, preserving the upper tray of the former cinema to create a multipurpose auditorium conditioned to accommodate the old and new uses of the building, such as cinema, presentations, concerts, plays, worship, among others; all this intensely linked with the public space. In addition, this project seeks to establish a precedent of how the old movie theatres could be intervened, considering that there are repeated cases in similar conditions, which have common characteristics due to their context, morphology, or typology; by doing this, the old cinemas of Santiago can be reincorporated into the city in an integral way.
