Transformación de las expresiones artísticas religiosas en Santiago de Chile, segunda mitad del siglo XIX

Abstract

Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, la configuración de las iglesias y el arte religioso vivieron un cambio significativo, en el que las construcciones coloniales y las esculturas de madera policromada fueron reemplazadas por nuevas soluciones. Este artículo se propone establecer el modo en que arquitectos, pintores y escultores participaron en el proceso de construcción de nuevas iglesias y renovación de otras levantadas y ornamentadas durante el período colonial. La llegada de arquitectos extranjeros, la formación académica de pintores y escultores chilenos, y la importación de obras desde talleres prestigiosos europeos son algunos de los fenómenos que articularon esta transformación de las expresiones artísticas religiosas en Santiago y que, hasta ahora, no habían sido consideradas en conjunto.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, the arrangement of churches and religious art underwent a significant change, in which colonial buildings and polychrome wooden sculptures were replaced by new solutions. This article aims to establish the way in which architects, painters and sculptors were involved in the construction of new churches and the renovation of many of the temples erected and ornamented during the colonial period. The transformation of the religious artistic expressions in Santiago was fostered by the arrival of foreign architects, the academic training of Chilean painters and sculptors, and the importation of works of art from prestigious European workshops, which, until now, have never been considered together.
