La explotación española del oro de la Araucanía: sus características y su aporte a la economía del reino de Chile durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza la situación de la economía aurífera de la Araucanía, grosso modo, entre 1565 y 1585; muestra la dificultad gubernamental para controlar el mercado interno del oro y su tributación, así como la preocupación constante de las autoridades por tratar de reglamentar y ordenar el proceso extractivo y la relación entre encomendero e indígenas tributarios. El artículo aborda además el papel de los mercaderes en esta economía minera de la periferia imperial y constata lo dificultoso que es poder establecer volúmenes de productividad. Con todo, queda claro que las ciudades del sur chileno aportaron significativamente durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI a la economía aurífera del reino de Chile, en un rango probablemente cercano al 40%.

This paper analyzes the state of the gold mining economy in Araucania between 1565 and 1585, broadly speaking. It presents the difficulties faced by the government in its effort to control the domestic gold market and taxation; as well as the ongoing concern of authorities regarding the regulation and organization of the extractive process, and the relations between encomenderos and tax-paying natives. The article also addresses the merchants' role in the imperial periphery's mining economy and confirms the complexities of establishing a productivity range. Even so, it is obvious that during the second half of the sixteenth century, the cities in southern Chile made a significant contribution to gold mining in the kingdom of Chile in a range probably close to 40 percent.
