Abstract
This research work investigates Rapa Nui's pursuit of self-determination within its special territory status. Central to this journey is the "Deed of Cession and Proclamation" of 1888, a historically complex document. The Rapanui people seek meaningful self-determination rather than secession from Chile, aiming to be recognized as a distinct Polynesian entity. Drawing inspiration from New Zealand's Polynesian territories; The Cook Islands, Niue and, Tokelau, they envision a collaborative governance model that respects their agreement, heritage and traditions. The thesis emphasizes the need for mutual understanding and a legal framework that empowers the Rapanui people and provides recommendations for future analysis to advance their cause.
