Two grafting techniques, the hole insertion (or terminal) and one cotyledon (or slant) grafting methods, were evaluated in two watermelon (Citrulluslamatus Thunb,) Mansf.) cultivars grafted on two commercial roootstocks (Lagenaria spp. Ser. and Cucurbitamaxima x C. moschata) through the survival of plants obtained 30 days following grafting and under simulated commercial nursery conditions so as to determine which of the techniques was more suitable for such conditions. A completely randomized design with two treatments which included the above grafting methods was used. Four independent experiments were carried out, each of them made up of a different rootstockcultivar combination. The Delta and Santa Amalia cvs. were used as scions and a Lagenaria spp. cultivar, known as Aurora, and a Cucurbitamaxima x C. moschata hybrid, called Tetsukabuto, were used as rootstocks. Mean survival rates for the four experiments were 58, 74, 60 and 36% for the plants grafted with hole insertion and 3, 0, 2 and 5% for those grafted with the one cotyledon graft technique. It was concluded that, for the conditions studied in the four experiments, plant survival depends on the grafting technique used, the hole insertion technique being more successful in the number of surviving plants.
