Nitroradical anion formation from nitrofurantoin in carbon electrodes

The electrochemical nitroreduction of nitrofurantoin has been studied on carbon paste and glassy carbon electrodes. We can observe a monoelectronic reversible couple ArNO2/ArNO2- and an irreversible peak due to the further reduction of nitro radical to the hidroxilamine via three electrons. According to the experimental results, the reduction process shows a typical behavior of an EC mechanism. The k(2) obtained values showed that the nitroradical anion was better stabilized on carbon paste electrode.
