Un análisis empírico de los determinantes del embarazo adolescente en Chile

Abstract

Mediante la estimación de un modelo de probabilidad Probit este estudio investiga los determinantes de la probabilidad de embarazo juvenil en Chile, para lo cual se revisa la literatura nacional e internacional referente al tema para obtener una primera aproximación hacia los factores que determinan este fenómeno. Para estimar el efecto de estos factores sobre la probabilidad de embarazo juvenil se utilizan los datos provenientes de la Encuesta de Protección Social 2002 y 2004. Los resultados indican que variables como estar soltera, una menor educaci ón del padre y tener una situación económica baja aumentan la probabilidad de ser madre adolescente, mientras que haber recibido educación sexual y que la adolescente cuente con un mayor nivel de educación la disminuyen.

This investigation estimates a regression using a Probit model to assess the main variables that a ect the probability of teenage pregnancy in Chile. An initial bibliographical evaluation is undertaken to identify the recurring factors mentioned by investigations, both local and international, as the main determinants of teenage pregnancy. The investigation utilizes data from the 2002 and 2004 Social Protection Survey (EPS) to estimate the e ect that these factors have over the probability of incidence of the aforementioned phenomenon. The results obtained indicate that being single, having a father with low educational level, and having a low income level increase a teenager’s probability of becoming pregnant. Having undergone a sexual education course and an increase in the teenager’s level of instruction seem to diminish these probabilities.
