Abstract
dc.description.abstract

With the termination of the Bretton Woods agreements and the advent of flexible exchange rates, there was a great demand for predictions of future exchange rate. Consultants and economists have tried to satisfy this demand using the most diverse and sophisticated models. Even so numerous studies reveal that the random walk is still the best prediction model available. This article compares the predictive power of three different models of exchange rate prediction, including the random walk, using quarterly data for the period 1974-1987. The results are not conclusive, but tend to point out that models that manage to extract the information influenced in the risk premium allow to obtain better predictions of future exchange rates than those derived from the random walk when working with quarterly data.
