Previous literature examining childhood exposure and neighborhood effects highlights the impact of the neighborhood on future outcomes throughout childhood. This thesis explores whether the arrival of drug trafficking in the neighborhoods could have a negative impact on the school performance of the children who live there. A novel database is used that exploits differences in neighborhoods occupied by drug trafficking at a granular level in the capital of the Chilean region between 2012- 2016. The results show, firstly, that the new territories occupied by drug trafficking are positively correlated with violence, poverty, and greater school lag in the municipality. Second, on average, proximity to drug-occupied neighborhoods is a negative predictor of lower levels of achievement and SES at the school level between 2009-2019. Third, conditional on the preferred identification strategy, the impact of being exposed to a new red zone of drug trafficking has a negative effect on school performance in eighth grade controlling for prior performance and selection. By adding direct and indirect effects, the total effect reaches up to 20 % of a standard deviation in the mathematics scores of permanent students. Of this total, half would be explained by indirect effects. The work suggests that of the indirect effect, the socioeconomic reassignment induced by the change in the neighborhood explains up to 15 %, while the reassignment of teaching quality and the school lag of peers up to 6 % together. Finally, heterogeneity analyzes suggest that the impact is stronger in men, students with medium and medium high previous performance, and with longer exposure to the neighborhood....
