Abstract The armed conflict in El Salvador (1980-1992) has been one of the longest and bloodiest in recent history in Latin America. Already 25 years have passed since its formal end, and the process of reconstruction of rural communities that were devastated by military operations that forced their population to move. In this time, new generations have emerged that did not live this event, but have been socialized in the postwar period within the affected communities, in daily interaction with the direct victims (relatives and neighbors). Given the scarce studies on the memory of new generations from a local perspective, this research aimed to understand the construction of memories about the armed conflict in young people of a displaced community, and to explore the way in which this event has conditioned their lives. Through qualitative methodology, the technique of life stories and photo-elicitation was used with 10 young people, who grew up after 1992 in the Nueva Trinidad community, a territory rebuilt by ex-refugees. In general, it was observed that young people, despite not having lived the war, construct memories of their own, in an attempt to make sense of a past that challenges them. This is possible thanks to dynamic mechanisms (emotions, imagination, empathy, etc.) that allow them to explore the past, and to unite the fragmented stories that family and neighbors have transmitted to them in a daily community that refers to the armed conflict through marks in the people and spaces. In addition, the memories of young people promote their orientation towards certain forms of being, of being with others, and of interpreting reality. As well as they offer elements that facilitate and make difficult the familiar and communitarian coexistence...
